Opening weekend report

Back when I first started hunting in 1988, we had a group of guys from Louisiana come up and hunt with us on Opening weekend and the last weekend of the season. Usually the total group numbered around 20, but we hunted large fields of CRP and milo, with blockers. It was a rule the birds were not shot at the end of a field until they had passed behind the line so there were no forward shots as the hunters came closer to the end of the field. There were no accidents.

Id like to have 72 guys to help me dig up and load one of those old rock fence posts. They are really heavy but cool. Always wanted one.

Damn westksbowhunter the first time I remember ever agreeing with every word you wrote. A friend and I am heading out tomorrow to hunt through Thanksgiving. I will report back how we did when I get home. I pretty much ignore social media and try to ignore anything work involved when I am out there hunting. It's my relaxing time like a lot of my friends get laying on a warm beach.

Just like a lot of things in life, people do things differently, and that doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. As long as you're safe and on the same page, I'm cool with it. Insulting a group because they have a bunch of family and like to hunt together is pretty low. I grew up hunting in groups of 10-15 (I personally prefer 8 or 9 now), and I treasure those memories with friends and family. I wouldn't have appreciated it any more or have any greater love of hunting than I do now if it would have been a smaller group.

Surrounding a field to try and cut off all possible escape routes is not hunting in my opinion.

Well, I guess if you really want to be sporting then you'll hunt by yourself with a single shot 20 gauge and no dog

I would do that before I would ever "Party" hunt! But not without the dog. Wasteful to not have a good dog. I hunt by myself most of the time, that way I know I got the bird. How in the hell do you tell who shot what in these large groups.

I certainly did not mean to get anyone upset. To each his own. I do take my own boys and own dogs hunting. But we do take one trip with my brother, dad and brother in law with their kids. We do have 16 hunt safe and legal. We talk about gun and dog safety every day. My dad has shot at 1 bird in three years but enjoys watching his grand kids hunt. sometimes he just watches in the truck. Sometimes the adults don't take their guns and let the kids hunt. If fields are not big enough we break up into smaller groups. Sorry if this offends anyone. I guess i could leave my dad and kids at home and hunt by myself. I would enjoy that but not as much as being with family. Good luck to everyone.

You sure haven't done anything wrong. I doubt you offended anyone and if you did, that's their problem, not yours.

It's just different strokes for different folks.

I've hunted in big groups, small groups and solo. I've had great times, good times and just times doing all of those. You probably have as well.

No one has the exact right answer for the very best way for you to hunt except.........YOU.

Good luck and have a great time with your family!

We hunted NE Kansas M-Th last week and found 35 coveys in 4 days. Pheasants were very thin- killed two roosters in 4 days. Didn't see many hens at all. Quail were very plentiful. Find cover, feed, and nesting areas and found quail. We limited out every day and were very pleased with the trip,

People need to hunt the way they like to as long as it is legal.

I like to hunt with pointing dogs and generally only shoot pointed birds. But I don't think its bad to hunt them with a flushing dog, or a big group.
Its great that you are taking the family with you, good job, have fun.

Wow 35 coveys!!! Thank you for that report. That’s extremely encouraging. We used to hunt private ground around Hiawatha and usually found about 4 coveys hunting all day and a rooster or two, but there was a bad ice storm one year and the fields were cut. Haven’t been there in a while.

I actually remember hunting the day after this ice storm up there, if it was 10 or so years ago! Utility poles sheared in half... and crops were cut a lot higher back then. So. Much. Ice. I was an idiot for hunting up there that weekend, but if I remember correctly we did pretty good :)
