Opening Weekend Hunting Reports 2015

Did anybody hunt the opener? One guy complains about people posting where they are hunting (town) and the whole SD Forum shuts down. That's a great way for this Forum to die a slow death.
Our group is leaving Saturday and hunting Sun - Thurs.
Will most definitely give my report when I return.
Good Luck everyone.
Bob

SD First Week

Drove up last Friday and had camp set up before dark. Hunted the next five days west of Winner, 2 guys and 2 PL's. Hot and dry the first 4 days, 80 degrees plus, tried to find water and hunted next to it. We saw plenty of birds and if we could shoot better would have come home with more. Bottom line is we ended up with 22 Roosters, lost two due to scenting conditions and dogs losing their nose. The last day was a little cooler and we hunted some broom grass/fireweed/treerows, we killed 4 and the dogs found two cripples. Lots of corn and sunflower still up.
I will headed back in about 3 weeks and see what I can find then.

Pulled out of South Dakota after our first time. We ended up after 4 days of hunting and learning. With 7 roosters 5 sharptail and one prairie chicken. Missed some to. 5 guys one Gsp. What does it mean for a dog to lose its nose

Saturday Morning, public ground, three dogs , two men and a limit of chickens.

Sunday, public ground, three dogs, two men and big fat 0 zilch, notta

Monday, switched to Ditch Parrots, Private Land, 8 dogs, 20 hunters and 55 Pheasants.

i assume the dogs were tracking a wounded bird and lost the scent trail....happens in hot, dry, dusty conditions.

Hunted private ne of Mitchell 2 days. Shot limit both days. Had a world class ribeyes at the cattlemen club in mitchell last night. Sitting at Plank Inn having another ribeye and heading to Chamberlain cabin tonight. Heading to Presho tomorrow. 1 man. 3 GSPS . Freelancing. Having a ball. Glad it's raining. It's been brutal on the dogs.

Sent one dog home last night. Had one with a lung infection and no intentions of hunting her. Took the pup to the vet in Presho for stitches this afternoon. Seen lots. Bagged 2. Heading to Seneca tomorrow with 2 dogs on the truck that won't see any action..:(

Had a great hunt in the Seneca area with a classmate. Drive up early in the morning from the cabin in Chamberlain. Glorious morning, but did not see many birds. Lots of early morning deer "scouting" going on it seemed. Shot a limit by 1. Cleaned birds afterwards. Lots of afternoon time to burn, so I hopped in the truck and drove to the Hoven area. Stopped by to see a hunting property but no one was home. I've always wanted to see the Catholic Cathedral in little Hoven, so drove in there. Wow, what an incredible structure for a little prairie town!

Went to leave the church, and had no reverse. Uh oh.. Was able to drive out of the spot, and headed back to Chamberlain about 4ish.. Made it to 212, and lost overdrive. Shifted to 3rd and made it to 47, and dead in the water. No transmission. Shut it down for 15 minutes, and called classmate from Oklahoma who I hunted with earlier in the day.. Need help.

Managed to round up a car trailer to get headed south. Called another friend who was in a tree stand in Plankinton. Need help! No problem he says. Friend from Oklahoma drives south, friend from Plankinton drive north. We meet on 47, and transfer from one car trailer to another, and head back to Plank, in hopes to make it in time to still get some wings at the Plank Inn.

Make it in time for some wings, and a much needed cocktail.(or 3). Staying over night cuz it's late. Headed home in the morning with a dog that can't breathe, a dog with stitches that can't hunt, and a vehicle that won't drive. It's amazing that things worked out the way they did, and Thank God for great friends!

It's an early end to a 5 day hunt, and I had a great time! Mitchell, Chamberlain, Presho, Lower Brule, Seneca, Hoven, and last but certainly not least Plankinton again.

I love this state!

tongue hanging out and breathing through the mouth I'm guessing.

It was very tough on her. She drank lots of water. We only hunted 4 days of the 7 we were out. I learned quickly that the dog needed rest so we could only hunt every other day. I'm trying now to convince my wife to let me get 2 more and trying to talk my dad into getting 1. That's not going to well for either of us.

i fixed that prob long ago, i still have 2 dogs, they trade out and take turns, at that rate i can get 8-10 days without major fatigue.....but the last 3 days they do slow down, of course so do I.....

Hunted a mix of public and private south central and west central SDAK. Tried to mainly hunt grasslands and CRP next to grain fields. Bird numbers of both grouse and pheasant were excellent, even saw 2 covies of Hungarian Partridge but didn't harvest any.

Heck yeah! Setters and an Auto 5, that's my kind of hunting.

Like to see a picture of a setter's/pointer's tail sticking out above some cover. Even with an Astro it is difficult finding a britt in knee high cover.
