It's opening day of residents only on public land only--went to three places checking on hunters--first place is a large state game production area and there were 5 cars parked there plus a state conservation officer parked along the road. It was 45 min into the season and the CO said he had heard ONE shot--so it was on to the next game production area an 80 acre very nice spot--there was one car a man and his son with a dog--they were just starting and had seen no one--this was about 1.5 hrs into the season. finally went to a very large game production area --several thousand acres--there was one truck there and he was bow hunting deer--said he saw several nice bucks and that the pheasants had really sounded off just after day break--said lots and lots of crowing as they headed from the tall grass into the HUGE corn field.

conditions as follows at noon Sunny 80 degrees with a moderate wind of 10 to 15 mph temp increasing to 87 by late afternoon-- harvest is in full swing with most of the soy beans done and a few corn fields to--there is still going to be LOTS of standing corn for the opener----and the birds are using them big time.

I've noticed that there has not been any waterfowl moving at all--maybe we are in for a warm late fall--if so late season pheasant hunting could be really good

typical opener coming up, hot and dry, watch the dogs, carry water in the field and rotate if you can.

As hot and dry as it's been there is going to be a very high fire danger. Be careful in the fields, especially with your vehicles. There is no rain in the forecast for the next week.

Made it out in the wind today. Turned out to be a great day. Asher got up three roosters and I was able to bring them down before they took off with the wind.

Good Update SDJIM. Hope cowboy does not think you revealed too much information. LOL Great Report.

His post didn't even mention a county much less a city. I like that you asked for location from everyone though. Would you like gps coordinates or should they just draw that on a map for you and the several dozen Internet scouts on this site?

Sully county
First hunt
Took break from harvesting corn
Three guys
9 birds
42 min
3 German shorthairs
Going to bar now

And yes "Greg" did not come this year. Told him stop the crown and cokes at lunch. Everyone in group was restricted to only two beers before the hunt.

Did he get upset when you talked to him about it or was there another reason he couldn't come?

Did anybody hunt the opener? One guy complains about people posting where they are hunting (town) and the whole SD Forum shuts down. That's a great way for this Forum to die a slow death.
Our group is leaving Saturday and hunting Sun - Thurs.
Will most definitely give my report when I return.
Good Luck everyone.
Bob

Did anybody hunt the opener?

Kind of what I was thinking. I'm not going to SD, but enjoy reading about everyone's hunt and looking at their photos.

I've seen more dead birds on my wife's facebook page(and that is saying something) due to a HS friend of hers that was up there that had a good hunt.

Heading out tomorrow for a four day marathon. Will make sure to report how things went early next week.

Hunted SAT THRU Monday with varied results--I have land in one place that is an island of cover in a sea of corn, seems to be lots of birds but no corn got harvested and birds were hard to come by.

On other land I have the corn came in on Sat and the birds got easy to find.

Also hunted on friends land about 10 miles NE and really got into the birds--no limits but then again some of us could shoot better--I myself got 5 roosters shooting my 28 ga---should have had 7 but missed two very easy shots.

I lost most of Saturday to the local PF banquet--takes a lot of time to set up with our small group--Platte is a nice little town of about 1200 and we had 450 people at the banquet--lots of work but well worth it.

I still think that the hunting will only get better in the latter part of the year:D

Just got back from opener.
Location = 40 mile radius of Mitchell
Conditions - Dry and Dusty and Hot!
2 Hunters 1 Dog
Day 1 - 5 Birds... missed a bunch to winds.
Day 2 - 4 Birds .. Hotter.. 81 degrees ?
Day 3 - 5 Birds... Dog nailed got nailed by either a barb wire or branch previous day. Out of action, 7 stitches and $ 300 bucks.. Thank god she wears a protective vest or the outcome could be far worse..

Best Part of Trip.. spending time with my Dad and friends. Also sprinkled the ashes of my shorthair maggie on our hot spot..

Hunting should be great in a month with cooler temps and no corn..

Opening day

Three Hunters, one Wire Haired Pointing Griffon.

Arrived in Yankton around 10 and purchased license. We then farted around a bit before arriving at the first public hunting destination just to the north east of Yankton. Just over an hour latter, three birds in hand. Continued working north to public areas south east of Parkston. Rose (the dog) went on beast mode and pointed bird after bird. Two more in hand with lots of misses. The weather heated up with strong winds so we did more exploring then hunting as we worked are way up to the motel in Mitchell. Every public are that we hit we were alone with no hunters in site and the all held birds. The people of South Dakota were very friendly with a few even thanking us for coming. Thank you to the people of South Dakota.

Bottom line, up front- first hunted for water, then hunted for birds. There has not been rain in the area I was in for 3 weeks and birds were only found near water sources. You may just find your plans for the perfect spot you found in the WIA guide or from googlemaps satellite ruined by lack of water so adapt and move.

Summary
Hunted SAT through TUE south of Aberdeen.
Covered lots of spots in a square from Cresbard/Conde/Doland/Orient.
2 to 4 hunters, 1 dog Sun-Tue

Sat- 2 guys, no dog. Hunted ditches with cover next to crops between Mellete to Conde on the south side. Lots of birds but too much wind and it took a while to find spots with water. Birds didn't move until right before sundown. Only 4 birds taken late. They really got moving in the wind or ran and we missed a lot of shots as we were rusty. Good to see this area make a comeback after heavy flooding wiped this area out 3 years ago. Watched a group of 17 hit a road-side slough and got 2 at about 2PM. They moved up to the adjacent tree line and shelter belt and took 85 birds so there are more there than you could ever imagine if you are just not hitting the right spot at the right time.

Sun- 4 guys, 1 dog. Windy again so we watched the Vikes win while we swapped from Mod to Full chokes in the guns. Got out at 3:30 and saw birds solid in ditches and sloughs next to water from Chelsea to Cresbard and south all the way to Athol. Filled out by 5:30, 12 birds. Hit everything we shot at with the Full chokes in by the end of the day. Forgot to be patient and not rush the first shot. Early in the day I missed 3 times at close range on the same bird and actually stopped and stared at my gun to figure out what was going on for a couple seconds. It crossed my mind that perhaps we missed some shot in that batch of reloads until I realized what was different.

Mon- Calm day. Hunted late again with different guys and dog. Birds all over: Turton, Athol, Chelsea, Doland areas. 9 birds taken near Athol- hunted sloughs near corn coming out and did tremendous. 9 birds in a couple hours.

Tue- Mostly packing up. Frankfort had a pheasant apocalypse earlier this summer- hailed 3 times there, once hard enough to kill livestock in about a 3 mile wide path. Don't go there, try north of that area. 2 guys with a dog walked 4 hours each day Sat-Mon on ideal ground and saw 10, got 3. Sent them to the NW quadrant we were hunting and they saw hundreds of birds all day from noon to close. Got their limit. They are purist about walking grass behind dogs but even they had to admin it was a nice break to actually see birds by walking the ditches.

My recommendation is to have your fun walking around the fields with your dog from noon-4PM but don't tire yourself out or stay in one area. Do some ditch and road hunting from 4 to sundown. Tell yourself it's just scouting and then don't pass up the birds who have lost the will to live and are standing bravely in the ditches waiting for the sweet release of your #5 shot express to the next world.
