Opener

Took the dogs out Saturday from 9-12. Put up 10 Hens and 5 roosters. Talked to a buddy he was in SW MN he walked maybe 2 miles and put up 20 hens and 15 roosters. Now what to do about this rain we are supposed to get Saturday. Maybe it will keep some of the hacks at home:D

I thought for some reason that opener was on Nov. 1st, now I'm in a mad rush to get things lined up. Thinking of me, the dog and my son and heading out to Lincoln Co. for Sat. Thinking of staying over night and hunting Sunday for a few more hours.
Hunted this past sat. again up North at the game farm, had to take the dock out and turn the heat on, up at the cabin anyways..... man I love watching my dog get all worked up and flushing Roosters! She seems to point the Hens more than the agressive flushes of roosters.

dont you have a calender with sat OCT.13th circled in black magic marker GPOWERS??? LOL HINT MN PHEASANTS IS ALWAYS 2ND OR 3RD SAT IN OCT.

MN DEER IS 1ST SAT in NOV. NOV.3rd THIS YR... SMALL GAME 2ND SAT IN SEP.

2nd year back into hunting....... :D

Have so many other things going on. I have already hunted Pheasants 7 times and have shot dozens of birds...... it's all starting to blend in.:D

I am gonna be hitting the belle plain area. What time do you think I need to get there to find a spot on public land? 6am? I am sure its gonna be packed! luckily I have 2 weeks off of work for pheasant hunting and get to go everyday!

Probably going to have to be down here at 6am. Why dont you head up by Alex area and get a little ways from the cities. It cant be to much further than driving to Belle Plain for you and the birds would be better for sure. Just my thought.

there is no way that the belle plain area gets hit harder then out west on the SD border by the marshall pipestone & LQP areas do & hardly anybody gets to there areas B4 7:00 am most arrive the last 45 min to a hour B4 the magic hour
so your 6:00 am time should find you a good area all to ur self for about 2-3 hours come 8:30 or so you will have plenty of company trying to move in on ur areas at least that is the norm for us the last 4-5 yrs we get there a few hours early & with 30 min to go you start to see all the trucks pileing into WMAs WPAs & WIAs the WIAs last yr were just crazy everybody trying to get that young dumb pheasant that was never hunted B4 lol

And your wrong! Sorry Munsterland. I Live 10mins for Belle Plain and hunt out out west for a reason. Not to mention the bird density of out there compared to here. Do I go out and run my dogs on most of the land you would go hunt saturday yes. Did we see birds this last sunday yes. But im not going to hunt here for a reason. Trust me Brit there is better places that are just a little further away.

I hear ya. I know its a circus down there. I was thinking the WMA areas near the game farms would be loaded with birds. I thought maybe for opener it might be worth a shot. I have thurs and fri off so I might do some scouting before the season opens. I guess its time I step up my game and find your honey hole!

Exactly what my bro-in law were saying today. (rain)

we will have to agree to dis-agree TBEAR many HACKS may stick close to the citys? but also many die hards with top notch hunting dogs hit the western MN region on the SD border to get in on some of the best pheasant hunting MN has to offer...

i also hunt out west for a reason THE HIGH BIRD NUMBERS ALSO the hunter per bird numbers seem to even up the closer to the citys you get i want high bird number low hunter numbers lol but thats rare to find in any state... somebody always has to say wear they went LOL

any way a few vehicles parked in the write spots can help you hold down a good area unless you have rude hunters in the area???

thanks GustavdaGSP lol

good luck to all & have a safe hunt this week end hope the weather is wrong man i hate the rain!!! of course we are in the middle of a huge drought & on opening day of pheasant its supposed to RAIN!!! B/S!!! LOL

also TBEAR i agree with you on one thing thow i would not want to go hunt 10 min from home wear i run my dogs either i would want some more virgin type land wear somebody didnt go to train/let there dogs run???

thats also a down side of hunting close to the citys you get guys let n there dogs run/chase the birds on PUBLIC LANDs it is legal but really sucks for the guy who wouldnt/dosent know any better LOL i have seen that a few time while out duck hunting near hugo guys unload there pack of dogs on the public & let them roam & chase...???

guess id go to a preserve for that??? sucks to pay thow...

good luck guys

thinking of heading up to my MN prairie chicken hunt early to scout & get in on some of the northern pheasant range in MN this season??? ill be up there around 10-17-12 ill go from the IA border & the south MN pheasant range to near the north limit of the pheasant range in MN in less then a WK cant wait then its on to the MN prairie grouse & maybe even hit a few ruffed grouse woods my puppy will be wore out i hope & get in on plenty of birds!!!

Munsterlander see page 102 of the regs look under the dogs section. You can train your dogs on public land its legal. I dont feel bad about it. There are hacks everywere thats life. All I was trying to tell Birdbritt is there is some better places to go than down by were I live.

As for hunting out west. Ya i get that there are some great people that have great dogs and they hunt out west. I know plenty of them. There is also a bunch of weekend wariors and complete dbags. If they stay home becasue of the rain that would be just fine with me. I really enjoyed last year when half the hunters stayed home just because the pheasant forcast was not as good as in the past. Good luck have a good year. What ever you decide to go do.

i seen as many hunters last opener as i ever did??? mainly at the new WIAs like i said everybody wanted to hunt virgin lands & birds in my area i guess??? we do have the most WIAs then any other county???

also TBEAR i did mention that it was LEGAL to run your dogs on public lands you are legal to do so... may not be the most hunter friendly thing to do??? but each to there own all i said was i would not want to hunt that PUBLIC LAND wear you let ur dogs run & chase pheasants either i would head out west to good pheasant country on the SD border also...
