O/U Which Barrel?

What barrel do you shoot first for your O/U?

I do my bottom. Just preference. Why do you shoot what you shoot?

Supposedly, the bottom barrel, due to its lower position is supposed to be fired 1st because it doesn't kick as much and has less muzzle jump. I never noticed much difference.
I agree with both parts of this. Only time I’ve shot top first is with Browning and due to their barrel selector and the propensity for it to slide to the middle and hang up on me if it was selected for bottom.

Typically my bottom barrel has an IC choke screwed in. Depending on what I am doing I will screw either a skeet or modified in the top. I shoot the more open choke first.... The order of bottom/top is dictated by me not wanting to change two chokes.

The safety is the same on my Win101 Waterfowler. You can change that H into a V and will not get caught in the middle.
Easy fix.

I'm backwards compared to most. Run my top barrel first on my Citori. No idea why other than that's how my old ruger red label was set up when it was gifted to me as a tip after a weekend of guiding back when I was in high school and I've been shooting top barrel first ever since.

Sk upper. IC lower early season over pointer.

IC top Mod lower mid season

Mod/full late season. Typically one last hunt.

Bottom first is the common norm for what has been said. Keeps the weight on top for easier follow up shot. I found my guns favorite loads via patterning, and in every day field hunting/training, I have the same choke in both barrels. In woods, opened up to cylinder on both barrels. Again with my favorite patterned shells.

I have a couple of fixed choke O/Us that are choked M on bottom and F on top. The other is I/C on bottom and M on top. Makes no sense to shoot the tighter choked barrel first with them.

From a Shotgun production side most Sporting O/U's without barrel selectors will generally fire the bottom barrel first for mitigation of recoil for the second shot. That being the case, I shoot all my hunting O/U's bottom first with a I/C and Mod in the top.

Kick!

Under. Less barrel displacement from recoil than the upper barrel.
