NSTRA Purina Endurance

For the second year in a row, Elle and I will be headed out to Lewistown, MT in 3 weeks for one of NSTRA's national trials the Purina Endurance (Sept. 4-7). As some of you may recall, Elle did quite well last year making it through the first 2 rounds and into the final day of competition before being eliminated. She was one of 32 dogs that made it to the final day out of 112 that started. I'm hoping she can make it that far again. But you never know on a given day, could be "one and done" on the first day. For her first brace she drew a 1/2 brother from Colorado. Should be an interesting run. The dog's name is Casey and the owner is Mark Beninga. Any of you Colorado guys know him and/or the dog?

If Elle does well in this trial I may consider taking her to the Dog of the Year Trial in Amo, Indiana in October. She qualified for the Dog of the Year Trail by being the "high point dog" in our region this past year.

Good luck to you and Elle Zeb. Give 'em hell.

Knock 'em dead!! Brittanys rule! (but I love all dogs). :D

Good luck to you both and be sure to keep us posted!

Headed to Montana in the morning. The Purina Endurance Trail starts on Wednesday. Temps are forecast to be in the mid to upper 80's in Lewistown this week. Thankfully our brace on Wednesday is early morning so temps should be fine then. I'll post our results from Wednesday's run.

Elle didn't have a good run but she did beat her bracemate and advanced to the second round on Friday.

Good to Hear, George.

A win is a win and you get to move on. Got some of the rust knocked off of you both I'll bet. I bet she runs better on Friday too. GL.

We had a good run today. Elle ran hard in spite of the 90 degree temps. She had 2finds, 2 retrieves and a back. Same as her bracemate but we got beat on points 537 to 553.5. I'm still happy with her performance. Now I have to convince the wfe to go to the Dog of the Year Trial next month in Amo, IN.

Congrats on making it as far as you did,George. That heat is tuff on dogs and sounds like she did well all things considered. For a young dog, you've taken her far already.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The dog that we lost to yesterday by 17 pts. went on today and finished in 3rd place. That dog should not have beaten us, here's what happened. There was less than 10 minutes left in the brace and I had 2 finds, 2 retrieves and a back on the card. I knew the other dog had 1 or 2 birds but no back. Elle goes on point and as I'm walking up there I see the bird and I'm thinking 3 birds and this brace is in the bank for us. I get to the bird and it's dead as a doornail. I stood there for a few seconds and todl the judge I think it's a dead bird. Just as I bend down to pick it up the judge yells "Wait, we have a back". I didn't see the other dog coming and he got a back at the last second. That back cost us the brace. I'd have won if Elle hadn't found that dead bird. Or if when I got to the bird I had just kicked it and let Elle release and grab it. The other dog wouldn't have see Elle on point in time for the back. Then to make it even worse the other handler tells me after the brace that they didn't know Elle was on point but they saw me raise my gun as I was walking up to the bird and the turned and got their dog up there in time. Oh well, some lesson's learned. Hopefully I can use them to my advantage in the future and luck will be on my side next time. Still proud of my dog, she ran hard and it was 91 degrees during our brace. She did slow down the last 10 minutes but that was to be expected. I'll just have to go back and get 'em next year.

Rock, FYI Nose advanced the first day with a 1 bird run. Same as I did so I didn't feel so bad. Scenting conditions were really bad at times due to the heat. One brace on Thursday didn't find find a bird so one dog advanced on ground coverage and obedience.

BTW, I am seriously considering going to Indiana for the Dog of the Year Trial in October. Have to have my entry in tomorrow. Probably come down and run a couple of braces in the pre-trial before the DOY trial.
