Norton Hunting

Well gentlemen I just returned back home after a few day hunt in Norton county particularly around Norton and the definately need to take the pheasant capitol of Kansas sighn down went hunting for 2 and a half days seen 20 birds max and shot 7 and we covered alot of acres all private accept for a smal WIHA spot very dissapointing to say the least

We ventured up there last season. We were doing fairlly well around Hill City but crossed some type of terrain change and our hunt got progressively worse the closer to Norton we got.

Joe,
Sorry your hunt didn't go any better than it did, but at least you got a few. Still a few weeks left so I am sure you will make up for it.

most definately going to make up for it in the morning I am back home now and going to go get a few birds in the morning to satisfy my needs as well as the dogs needs for birds

Had the same experience this year in Hill City/Norton area. Very tough. Not as many birds and way more hunters then the last 5 years.

Last year was the best I have seen sense I have been hunting Kansas.

That's a shame... People historically have seen good numbers in that area - hopefully they'll come back next year.

Good luck in the morning!

We hunted that area just before Thanksgiving. We had some luck but it appeared that there was a tremendous amount of pressure. The duck hunters around Webster lake were rocking though. Tons of geese and ducks. May take my waders next year.

Hunted Norton opening weekend. Did just okay. Didn't see a ton of birds. Lots of hunters though.

It is good to hear from other hunters that they had limited success in the Norton. I got 3 on the opener and the last two were at sunset. I had to work real hard to get 1 the second day. The last couple of years has not been all that great. The best numbers that I saw was 13 years ago. When you kicked birds all day long, and the dog and I were real green.
I finished up in Burlington and hunted a half day on CRP with some friends we kicked more then I have the previous days. I keep going back for sentimental reasons, but I am questioning driving the extra hours.

Swing and a miss

The local game warden kept saying there were alot of birds, but compared to what?
Don't get me wrong, I love the area, but it is getting harder, maybe time to scout out new areas........

My dad and I struggle with whether or not to go back every year. We have started hunting other areas later in the season and have bagged more birds than we do in Norton on the opener. But, I started going there with my dad when I was twelve. He had been going for years before that. Starting taking my boys along when they were about 6 and 8 years old. We stay in the same motel rooms every year. Eat at the same restaurant. Talk to the same farmers. Reminesce about when we got a bird at this or that spot, etc. Probably will continue the tradition regardless of bird numbers.
