Ollie,
Welcome to the site, not surprised to see that your madra fiaigh is of mostly spaniels. There's just something special about them.
There's a lot of good people here that share the same passion of dogs and hunting. Post often and we would love to see some pictures of the habitat in Ireland.
One of the very cool things about this forum is the diversity of people and hunting styles on here. I tend to get stuck in my own area -- which is a 5-hour radius around Kansas City, Missouri, and don't think about the variations of hunting birds with dogs that are outside my little piece of the globe. Ollie -- I hope you'll share your style with us. By the way, I'm 1 / 4 Irish. Kinda.Dakotazeb: it's all spaniels we use on out shoot. I have 1 English springer spaniel & 1 cocker spaniel, the rest of the fellas have English springer spaniels.
Parooster: we buy pheasant poults at 6 weeks (around august) & put them in a release pen with a net over the top to protect from predators. About mid September we take the net off and birds leave the pen. We keep feeders in areas of good cover so the birds stay around & we normally start shooting around end Oct. Season finishes at end of January. We don't shoot all the birds we release and some of the birds will breed, as long as we keep the vermin down.
Ness: the syndicate is the name for the pheasant shoot. There is 5 of us in it and we all do our fair share of work with feeding the birds, vermin control & obviously financially.
At this time of year we start getting migratory woodcock, so a lot of what you guys call upland shooting involves woodcock too.
Thanks for the welcome fellas.
