Been lurking for a little while and finally decided to join.

Been pheasant hunting since I was 12 (30 now), so while I ain't a complete rookie, this upcoming season will be my first in a while that I would say is "serious hunting".

Did a lot of talking with a guy I work with about his GSP and that started a chain reaction LOL! I purchased a puppy last November. I then decided to give up my main hobby of snowmobiling to focus on hunting and raising the dog, and then traded away a nice rifle for a new shotgun. Wife still can't believe that I did any of those things, but hey....I got pheasant fever!

My dogs name is Moses. As mentioned, a GSP, from a breeder here in WI. Not sure on forum rules, so I will not mention the breeder by name, but after researching, I feel that it is one of the best. Moses just returned from his 8 weeks of adult school and like me is waiting for the leaves to turn! For now, pointing at the robins in the yard will have to keep him busy.

I live NE of Fond du Lac and do most my hunting in the Kettle Moraine and on my local hunting clubs land. Recently purchased a membership and some birds at a new to me hunting club in the area. Again, not sure on the forum rules, so I won't post the name. I will say though that I have been doing a lot of sporting clays out there to get used to the new gun. Last season it seemed like I wasn't on them like I should have been, and now besides getting razzed from the buddies, I have a dog that will not want me missing them!

Got 80 acres in the northern part of the state (Tomahawk) as well, and I am counting down the days for grouse hunting. My 80 acres connects to almost 300 acres of timber company land that I know is full of grouse! Never did it before, but me and Moses will give it our best shot.

Aside from bird hunting I do a little atving, build ARs for fun, did some coyote hunting for the first time last winter, and just try to shoot and be outside as much as possible.

Looking forward to contributing to the site and maybe finding someone to share all these birds that get released up here in fall.

Welcome, Congrats & Good Luck!
Your forum name/handle instantly caught my eye - my first waterfowl/upland dog's name was 'Holy Smokin MOSES' (a lab) & he pretty much lived up to it! The one I have now (from the same bloodlines) is named 'Royal Second CHANCE'...
Careful, once you get hooked there's no turning back! ;)

Your wife will soon realize that you are now ruined for life :D
Nice looking GSP :10sign: and welcome to the forum. Post Often on the progress of Moses

Welcome fellow Wisconsinite! Beautiful GSP! I too have a new dog (ESS) and looking to get serious this fall....can't wait! Good Luck!

Nice story, glad you reverted to the love of your youth and brought along a canine companion for the ride. Yep, tell the wife that she'll probably be relegated to her own chair as you and Moses veg on the couch together. Times a changin'. There'll by boots and collars, chaps and training birds to contend with! Enjoy this fall and know it will only get better!

I also hunt the kettle moraine area. I lived on a small farm near the kettles when I was younger and I have hunted there my whole life. I am 73 years old.

Welcome! Great looking GSP.

whereabouts was it? I usually hunt around the Dundee area.

Good looking dog Moses! Have fun. My suggestion is to get your wife involved and you will always have a hunting partner and always be allowed to go!

That is one of the reasons I went with a pointing dog. I thought it would be a great way to get my wife, and more importantly, my 6 year old daughter into it. I thought that a pointing dog would make hunting a little more exciting for her, and I know that in order to keep her interested, it has to be exciting. She is more than likely going to be my only child so I have to work fast if I want to save her from becoming completely "PINK". My wife isn't the outdoors type and I don't want my daughter to be like that. So far it is going OK. She likes to ATV, hike around the acreage (when the ticks don't carry her away), and is asking about hunting. May even take her along deer hunting this year.

My wife says she isn't happy about the dog.....but when he curls up next to her on the couch I can see her melt!

Welcome HM! Would love for you to share your stories and pic's of your up coming Grouse season!!!

I have two daughters and one loves to hunt and fish with dad. make those first few times out fun and exciting and she will grow to love those times with dad. Sometimes it might mean leaving the deer stand early or allowing her to eat candy or something like that to pass the time. Sometimes they get a little too loud as well, but that is all part of the memories.

Welcome

Nice looking dog. I did the same thing that you did, only at age 55. Pheasant fever took over, sold my bow after 35 years of bow hunting, got rid of my rifle. Bought a dog, two 16 gauges, (George's fault) sold my 12 benelli, quit foodplot ting, and will spend my remaining time and energy in sd and nd pheasant hunting. Good to see some badger fans here. I'm just north of madison.
