New Cocker pup

Just picked up another puppy last week. I saw the thread with people posting about a Springer addiction and felt convicted to reveal my Cocker addiction as well :)

Chica makes Cocker number five for me. She's a looker, don't you think?

The day after I got her, the rest of my dogs were looking awfully jealous. So, even though I'd never done it, I put three of them down at once and went for a little hunt. We didn't see a single bird (not for lack of effort on the dogs part!), but I had a little photo shoot with them anyway.

Beautiful pup! It's ok all of us spaniel-holics need to be there for one another. It helps to know you're not alone with your addiction.:coolpics:

great looking pup! congrats.

our springer doesn't even break the 30# mark. My wife loves the size, so I'm tempted to look for a cocker as our next pup. I've heard they've got a bit more mischief in them though.

I can tell you this, I had a buff cocker male years ago that was one of the best Ruff grouse dogs I have had to date. He would also get ducks out too. I have a soft spot in my heart for them little big hunters. Great dogs

More mischief than a springer pup?

Ken, you're missing out buddy. That is one cute little bugger.:10sign:

Thanks for the compliments, guys. She's still going to have to prove herself in the field before she can get too comfortable in the kennel, but at least she's got good looks going for her!

c_d, some Cockers can be mischievous, in my experience. However, I think most of the mischievousness that I have seen is simply the dog trying to find someway to please me and get my attention. They are definitely greedy for attention :) That black and tan dog sitting in-between the other two is the most honest dog you will ever meet. Learns what he is supposed to do, then does it. He doesn't take much correction, and doesn't forget what he learns. The black and white sitting next to him is one of the most dishonest dogs you'll ever meet! The dog on the left is honest, but as intense as is physically possible, I think. She's the dam of the dog in the middle...I'm breeding her next month to the same sire...there's a possibility there might still be a pup left if you're interested.

There we go, problem fixed. Nice pic, cool markings. Did you make any more hunt tests?

I made two this fall, and had a rough time of it. I have my excuses though :) Rocky passed the first day of the first one, then had a hen that he almost pulled out of the air land 30' in front of him after the flush. He was steady for about 5 seconds, then broke :( Not his fault as I hadn't trained for anything like that. After he broke, I stopped him again about halfway to the bird, but we were already out.

The second hunt test, I got two legs of the JH done for Polly (his dam, who I'd only had for a couple of months), which I know isn't a big deal, but I wanted her to have the experience. They used Chukars in the event, and since Rocky had never seen a Chukar, I bought five of them from a local guy the week before the event. He caught ever single one of the stupid things...they'd run for a bit and then he'd grab them. Stupid things. Well, when we got to the hunt test, he thought he could still catch them. He was too sloppy on the hupping because he pursued a bit too far, and didn't pass. The second day he was actually looking better, and then I blew it for him. He made a good hard flush, paused to look at me while I accidently knocked my whistle out of my mouth, then continued on his way until I could recover. Since then he has learned to be steady without the whistle, but we weren't at that stage yet back then. Again, my all my mistake...I should have quite running him on those Chukars at home when I realized they weren't going to fly, and not knocking the whistle out of my mouth would have helped too:mad:

He still got a lot of attention though...a guy who trains Cockers that was there is interested in breeding to him or getting a pup out of his parents. And, after the first HT in MN, I ended up selling a six month old pup that happened to be a full brother to Rocky to a family up in MN that field trials. I guess they were able to see that I was the only thing holding my dog back:D

The plan is to start running in FTs this spring. Not sure if I'll make it to any HTs or not this year, but I'd like to make it to a few FTs.

Any of you cocker owners aware of where I might find a well started english cocker spaniel? I am looking for a dog about 1 to 2 years old, with some house time - should be house-broken. It will mainly be a pet, but also a hunting buddy. I am looking in Minnesota and the bordering 4 states.

Thanks - Rob
