need my head examined?

Well I got me the new garmin alpha tonight at cabelas nothing like a 870.00 dollar purchase for some stupid dog collar!! I mean who in there right mind spends that on a collar? And I don't have a clue on how to use it, I am still in sticker shock here lol . I told my girlfriend theres a few things I guarantee guys are going to spend money on and not give it a second thought hunting stuff, fishing and that sweet stuff between your legs baby girl:D Right or wrong guys? Lets hear it

Head examined

Not for buying the Garmin. I use my Garmin 220/40 plus a Tirtronics ecollar on the same collar. Works great. You have a one unit device, will be lighter in weight.

Enjoy keeping track of your dog. Lady friend I have no solutions.

Cheaper to Rent !! Don't know about the collar!!

Oh man this FU&^%^ thing is really pissing me off I cant even figure out how to shock the dog with this outer space gadget I about threw it out in the street till my girlfriend took it from me nothing makes fu&^%#$ madder

The buttons (the three rubber ones at the top) are used to run the ecollar,

Strap it on your leg, push the middle button..

Did you charge it?

Just don't let the girlfriend learn how to use it too good.....sneaking out to have some beers with the guys will be a lot tougher when she puts the transmitter in your truck Lol!

man oh man just the little that I have used this is awesome I just use the compass to see where he is at if cover is to thick like it was this weekend. I was in the corn and hadn't seen newt in a while I feel the vibrate and beep says newts on point 106 yards away in the thickest thickest tree plum thtrees whatever go in nothing well it must have pushed them to the crp cause newt points one in it and I nail him if it wasn't for that I would have never found him and I don't wanna shock him not knowing where he is at? man I tell you just the little I have figured out its awesome, can I be any more pre historic wow!!!

I bought the 220 and 2 DC-30 collars for the 2010 season. All I ever use is the compass screen. The on point feature is really nice when you can't see your dog, but the peace of mind is priceless.

Checked the distance traveled feature for the first time during Friday's opener,
you just always have to remember to stop tracking when you get in the truck to change fields. Both dogs ran about 25 miles. I probably don't use near the features that are available.

It's nice to be pleased with a purchase when you drop that kind of $$$

Astro gps

I have commented that I enjoy the Astro for tracking my dog but the comment by another mentioning to turn off the unit when not tracking brought to mind an occurrence several years ago in SD. I transferred my dog's info to the computer and in reviewing I noticed that he had achieved a speed of 45-50 mph. He has good speed but not that. Viewing it on Google Earth indicated that had been achieved on the highway. I then knew that I had not stopped it from tracking when I moved from one hunting area to another.
I have found him buried deep in cover at various times and in good time.
I purchased a Garmin gps unit about 20 years ago to guide me when fishing on Lake in the Woods and marveled how I could find my way to the dock. This Astro is capable of much more and is much easier to use

Knew you would like it.

The thing that I have really come to like that I really didn't think I would use is the tone.

My younger dog Indy can get out there a ways. He will get on a hedge row on the down wind side a be 900 yards in no time. But I am getting him trained to come back to me with the Tone. It doesn't matter if he is way out there or the wind is blowing hard, he hears the tone and is headed back.

So did you Mark the location of the coveys. That is a great tool, and then you can transfer the locations to google earth.

I have a top secret Google Earth Map that shows all the coveys I have found in the last 5 years. No its not for sale!

fish I know I forgot to hit pause on the tracking distance but I did it right sunday only hunted til 930 and he had went 12.5 miles at 10 miles an hour average now this is a wore out dog he acted a little lack a daisical and steve I did mark the coveys but you know I know where every covey I ever killed from Hillsdale lake to western ks to nw mo which I am sure you do to, you just cant say enough about this garmin. But if there is a negative about it and only one is and my girlfriend also said it is the instructions are terrible its really hard to figure it out for me I cant read something and comprehend it so she would read it to me and tell me what to do kinda hard for a dumb bricklayer:D

There are just a lot of options, and knowing where they all are is tough.
I don't have it all figured out yet, thats for sure.

But the Hot Hooker can keep on giving if you know what I mean!
