Me and a friend did some pheasant hunting on Sunday.. We each got a bird and my buddy said he would clean them because he had some geese to clean to.. Well I called him today and he still hasn't cleaned them yet.. He said they have been in the tool box on his truck.. And the tool box is around 40-45 degrees during the day with our weather right now.. Do you guys think the meat is still good? As you can imagine I'm not very happy with my buddy either way

You have already made a decision, the right one. Tell him to eat them himself. or you could reporting him to violating the "wanted waste" law, to the Game Wardens. Find a new buddy.

we clean ours every day after the hunt and put them in baggies in the ice chest. I also suggest you dont eat at the buddies house unless you take the meat for dinner.

I personally wouldn't have a problem eating it.

My brother-in-law will leave birds laying on the floor of the garage for a week, ten days at a time. Then clean two weekends worth at one time. Claims they are better aged. I don't know about that, but he eats them and has never been sick.

Unless the tool box got warm in the sun, the meat should be fine. To tell, just peel the skin off a breast and take a good sniff.

And I thought I had the laziest brother-in-law on earth--

I told him to skin em and eat them himself.. He could tell I was pretty pissed about it.. He's not the kind of person to purposely do something like that but still.. And I seemed to get some mixed answers but I just don't want to chance it.. I would have just asked my dad but he probably woulda smacked me in the head for not cleaning my bird in the first place lol.. But thanks for all the helps guys!!

You shouldn't be pissed at all.

If you read the thread posted above about hanging game birds maybe you would realize that it might have actually done some good.

My dad always hung his birds in a shed for a week or more. Can't be any different than leaving in the tool box of the truck in cool weather.

Call him back and apologize. Maybe he'll give you back what will probably be the best tasting pheasant you've ever had.

depends on the bacteria on it, or access to it.

Bird with skin and feathers on it, gutted and hung out of the sun doesn't have the hazards that skinned meat out in the open does. Body temp will go down to ambient temps and stay there. Unless other sources of contamination are introduced, birds probably would be fine.

I've waited days, but I was the only interested party. For all others, I've cleaned and refrigerated all game meat.

Lesson learned, I'd guess. :)

its no different than an aged beef that we pay top dollar for the longer you hang it the better it is the enzymes go to work on the meat and start breaking it down to make it nice and tender

unless its over 55 i will always hang my birds for a day or two. They just taste better. That gives time for the adrenaline to leave the muscles. dont be a girly man eat the meat.:p

The bad thing about gamebirds is they are so often gut shot, stinky, dirty stuff to flavor the surrounding meat. :(
Cool weather, sure let em hang or lay until the next day.
Leaving a game bird lay around until you feel like cleaning it appears to be lazy and wastefull. Only meat salvageable might be the breast.

I agree with most of the posts on here. As long as the birds arent gut shot I usually hang them by the neck in my garage for a couple of days. If they are shot in the breast or in an area where there is alot of damage I clean them right away. I understand your intial concern but the birds were probably fine.
