my name is Cody new to pheasant hunting looking to make new hunting friends

Has anyone on here owned a few different breed of hunting dogs? Between the different breeds did you notice one breed do better than the other when hunting? I just want here different point of views.

Yeah us common folk are relegated to lesser breeds, I just think those with setters and pointers are making up for a short comings that is why they need long tails......:D

Hey Cody, each dog owner has their particular breed(s) of dogs as a personal choice. So, each post about their dogs or hunt, or insight is a different point of view.

Just read the threads, what you will find is that all are dog lovers, and all have loyalty to and respect for their choices of dogs.

You will find yours, as well, I'm sure.

Good luck Cody and send us some pic's when you get your dog!!! I like their style and temperment. The only thing I don't like about them is their longer hair. Burrs and stickers are not fun getting out of their hair. But your dog breed of choice will be fine for upland and a great family dog as well!!:thumbsup:
 
Most guys know I am partial to Golden Retrievers. But because of what you are looking for initially, unless you are willing to spend a few bucks, look at all breeds. You saw some nice labs when you were hunting don't rule them out. Look for dogs in your price range, let the price reflect your choice rather than the breed. But if you are stuck with a certain breed be careful. You can find cheap dogs in any breed but there is a reason they are cheap. Do you homework because it is a commitment of a few years of your life.
 
If you are interested in an intelligent dog, easy to train, Labs and Golden's are among the top 5 for intelligence. Both are used for drug/police work, seeing eye, and hunting.

Not sure where the Llewellyn dog fits...

Got my first dog ever a year ago. Started hunting her last fall. Don't skimp on a good dog. My dog trained me to hunt. Not that I'm a good shot by any means as I just started on birds 6 months ago but she's pretty darn good for a 1 year old. Or good enough for me, take it for what it's worth. By the time you pay vet bills, food, toys, collars, etc you might as well buy a dog that has "drive" and it will be more than worth the money. Just make sure the dog fits your lifestyle. $1000 seems like a lot but over the life of the dog it's a good investment. Hope that helps. I'm a rookie as well.

I have a pudelpointer because she fits my lifestyle and I always wanted a bearded lady. There's lots of breeds with drive. Maybe I lucked out but she has sure put me on the birds!
 
I almost got one of those about 4 years ago. Guy just wanted too much for it. But I was gonna give em a whirl.

I am waiting for my pup to get a little older. A few months ago I started using my brothers lab and seeing what I can do with her. she never saw a bird before or never had any training and this past weekend she found ,flushed, and retrieved 2 birds it was awesome!
