Last Weekend of the Season. Who's Hunting?

Last hunt for a friend

I am heading out Saturday to hunt with a friend who I have been hunting with for 20 years now. This may be our last hunt together. He is facing a brain surgery that may leave him unable to hunt again. We are goin to our spot by Abilene for a day trip to see our dogs work together and hopefully find a few birds. The guy is General Rooster( we gave him the rank after a triple on roosters) and it is hard to see this happen to him. We hope he is able to hunt again but it looks like I will be adding his GSP to my crew for next season to keep her sharp. Will post pics next week.

Kick'em Up!

just finished the weekend hunt and ready for the final week. What happened to the season....it just flew by this yr. Now it's time to pick up the trailer and haul it home, clean up the dog trailer do bearing, new tires and welded up some new cracks from them dirt rds.

By far, it's been one of my best yrs.

You and yours are quite a bird team.

Looks like we're putting the final plans together to drive out Friday after work and hunt most of the day Saturday. My 1 1/2 year old GSP is showing tons of promise and needs on some birds. First hunt since my old dog headed over the rainbow bridge a couple weeks ago though. :(

Sorry about the loss of your dog. Your young dog will know he's alpha now and show you his own stuff.

I have a group of family and friends coming in from Colo. and the Hutchinson area. We are planning to huint Seward and Stevens Co. Sat through Mon. I have been busy scouting and lining up ground th is week. I've found plenty of birds just hope we can corral them and get some shooting.

Hopefully everything will be for the better and you'll walk the hunting fields together again.

My brother and I started out today for our last 2 and a half day of this season. We didn't see a rooster until 10:30 but had our two man limit by 1:30.

Scenting conditions were tough with plus 50 degress and big wind. My brother was the rudy magnet today with multiple bird flushes and some fairly easy shots. We will back at it in the morning and enjoying the finale.

My dad and myself along with our 2 pups will be heading out in the morning till Sunday. On a quick side note about the great folks of Kansas this just happened. We've got a map that shows who owns what where we hunt. I've been trying to get permissision to hunt this property for the last 2 weeks but all I ever got was the answering machine. So tonight I called a little later and got his wife, she asked if she could tell him who was calling and I explained where we are from and that my brotherinlaw has a house in town and that her husband was the person we needed to talk to hunt this particular property. I could hear her telling her husband everything I just said and she came back on said the property 3 miles north and I said thats the one and he said go right ahead.

I love the State of Kansas!

Hunting around Wellington Sat and Lyons area Sunday. Plan to finish up Monday after school is out & hit the honey hole one more time. It has been the best season ever.

I just got back from the Hill City area. Went down on Monday and came home today (Friday).
Had a great hunt, shot my limit two days and could have had the limit on two other days. It got hot, 62 on Thursday but I still got into the birds. I shot the largest and oldest rooster that I have ever seen two days ago. He has spurs that are 5/8" long and I'm going to have him mounted! (It was my wife's idea)
Kudos to Kansas! They really have their act together with the WIHA. It's the best system around and if you are willing to work hard you can kill birds.
I only saw a few other hunters, mostly in town when I was at the grocery store.
Thanks Kansas, you provided a great place for me to come hunt!!!!!!:10sign::10sign:

Thanks to all of you sharing your stories. I'm sitting in a hotel room in Dallas because my daughter is playing in a soccer tournament down here this weekend. Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter and love spending time with her BUT who schedules a soccer tournament on the last weekend of pheasant season, huh?

The rest of you keep after 'em and leave a few for the rest of us next year.

I limited out today and my buddy got his first pheasant! He's been a Texas quail hunter and a West Virginia grouse hunter all his life so I'm happy for him. I have 2 days left of hunting!

Going back out to where we've been flushing quail and we are going to go ahead and take the dog my friend got. He's a rescue dog and well, I think he's brain damaged, but he grows on you. He's got the pointing gene for sure but he wouldn't know a bird if it bit him on the butt. He's going to obedience school shortly then John can get him ready for next year and I'll probably get a couple of my own dogs; still kicking around what breed's and whether to go rescue dogs or not.

Woops, sorry bout that, got off topic a bit.
One last weekend but we haven't seen any pheasant where we hunt quail. We are quailing around kingman lake.
Any suggestions for finding some pheasant on the last day? We got all weekend plus monday off so we can drive far if we wanna.
