So today I knock on 7 landowner doors to ask permission to hunt. And guess what they all said? Noooooooooo. You know sometimes you get to the point where maybe just out hunt preserves or start waterfowling again.

Sorry,

Ever think it is your timing???? You offer to help this land owners with anything to help them????

This late in the season it's hard to get permission to hunt on some peoples land. You might try to help the farmer/ rancher/ land owner during the off season with fencing or other thing that need to be fixed, on the farm. You know give a little get a little.:)

I hear ya upland! I don't hunt wild birds anymore in Illinois. Nowhere to hunt. We have enjoyed SD but the price for treaspass fees is getting way out of control. At the preserve I can shoot 3 birds for $40
It's not what I want but all I have.

Man Upland, i'm starting to think you ought to take up golf or something. This hunting thing seems to stress you out a bunch:D

I think you are doing it the hard way.

You need to get introduced to these owners. Find out who you know who may know them. work you way into being introduced to them.

They don't know you from Adam, they don't know anyone who knows you. Your chances of being allowed are very low as you found out. Find out where the locals have breakfast (farmers like to do their socializing at a set breakfast place). Introduce yourself to some, hang out there and make a few friends.

If you have permission on land near them ask that person to introduce you to other owners in the area.

You need an "in" and your success rate will increase.

Also time of year does make a difference. Late season is the worst time to seek permission. If they have ground to hunt then you can be sure that they care about the wildlife and the populations. They're caretakers. Late season they want to make sure there are birds around for next year.

Go back in the spring or summer. If you get told no I would ask if it was OK t check back with them again sometime and if they say yes, check back!

(I'd also tell you to use some salesmanship but have no idea if you need to or not. It's a numbers game! and a timing game. Keep doing it!)

For every 20 "No's" I get 1 "Yes". I scout year round and have found a lot of my spots by doing service calls at their place. It's one benefit of being an HVAC tech, people always need heat up here. I leave my card with my cell number on it and tell them to call if they have any problems. I even leave cards with the one's that tell me no. You never know when they'll have an issue and I can trade my services for permission to hunt on their land. It's tough to find those that say yes, but the way I see it, I already know what the answer is if I don't ask. My advice would be to keep trying and knocking on doors. It also doesn't hurt to have something to trade for either, whether it be labor or something in your area of expertise that will benefit them.

Upland, that is one of the reasons I ended up buying land. Just got tired of asking permission and all that goes with it.

Chris I hope I don't offend you with this but when I read this comment I laughed and said "Hey, why didn't I think of that." The truth is I'm sure that is probably most of our dream on here but the fact is we are door knockers and public land hunters for now.

Keep tellin' it like it is brother:cool:

Heck no!!!!! My hunters would take me to court!!!!!

If you were strapped for acres I could see buying a 40 and then putting birds out but truefully you would probably be dollars ahead joining a good hunting club near home and get the dog on alot of birds.

Sp pheasant ranches are a bad thing if birds are low?
