LaCrosse Pheasant Reports

Just got back from a 3 day hunt in La Crosse area. More hunters than birds. WIHA have been hit real hard. Alot of 6-7 truck caravans going from one WIHA to another. Most of the birds on WIHA have been pushed to private. Hunted hard, 2 guys and a dog, only ended up with 2 birds.
On the way home to SEK stopped SE of Pratt on one half mile section of WIHA and got 5 birds in 2 hours. Just a little info, good luck.

When people ask about a specific area there are many, many people reading these sites, public sites lurking, and yes they don't know your honey holes, but what are they going to do, there getting an atlas and circling all the WIHA and they will get to some, and not others but it can direct a crowd in a hurry. I have only been to KS once last year, and I went to NC even hearing here its best farther west, for various reasons I won't get into. I called some locals to that area and asked about bird numbers, read this site and the State site, we did OK not great going back this year in a different area, live and learn,
IF YOU DO MAKE FRIENDS ON HERE, USE THE P.M. TO ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS, ITS JUST A GOOD WAY TO DO IT.
This site has someone new everyday, first post "going to KS tomorrow where should I go".

I'll agree fenway.... but I was an idiot for sugesting that people did things like that. lol

Lacrosse was talked so highly about on here for the past few weeks, and it seems it had the most pressure.... wierd huh?? lol

These posts recently about how pissed some guys were about how hard some walk-ins are getting hit, and how many out of state plates everyone was seeing, Anyone think this site helps that cause??? I think not....

I'm not trying to be or cause anti out of state feelings, because ha I'm from WI.
I've seen KS guys doing it also.
If you have to ask specific questions or advice use the P.M.

lol, didn't even see that... All I'm getting at is how naive people on here can be. Whether or not they believe it, it happens. Welcome to the age of the internet scouter... sad really.

I think that people use this site to confirm what they already know, from reading the State reports and press releases, pheasants forever, gundog magazine, Outdoor Life, or any one of a number of online and published reports. The state draws a bullseye on an area, everybody floods the WIHA's. I bet KDWP considers this a success. Kansas the talk of the pheasant hunting world. Even if your living in a bubble, you know the western half of the state is where to go. With 200,000+ hunters afield, staying week at a time, it won't take long to pound every corner of every open field. May have to face a reality that things have changed, and are not likely to return to the good old days, anytime soon. It doesn't help that Iowa is in the dumps, and all the former Iowa hunters, resident and non-resident are heading your way. Sport just got tougher.

Missing WIHA

Up until last year I used to go to specific WIHA spot very near La Crosse and always found birds. For whatever reason they stuck to that area like flies on stink. That wonderful bird holding mecca is no longer WIHA so until I can find out who owns it and gain permission I won't be sniffing around La Crosse.

I am sure there are birds all over the place but that was my favorite spot if for no other reason than its incredible consistency.

I went through the area on my way out to some ground I hunt. While driving slowing along the WIHA's, I would have trucks race by, pull off and pile out to get into the field before I did. Happened on three tracks in a row. Bunch of d.cks if you ask me. Lots of pressure. I quit hunting the area about three years ago due to pressure. I would say internet scouting really sent hunter numbers up in this area.

Tharkman, thanks for the tip about the WIHA being lost since last year, I may pull out my old atlas's and look that one up. It narrows down the search to just a few.

I've been hunting Rush Co for last 15 years and due to hunting pressue I've given up on opeining weekend. Hunted the week after the opener and hunters were everywhere, and more rude than ever - 3 different times I arrived to a WIHA and was out hunting in clear sight of the nearest road and another group dumped out and pushed us out of the field. Wish they would have held their ground while I was giving them a piece of my mind and I'd have given them a piece of my fist.

I rarely hunt opening weekend even here to many crazzzzzy people that don't normally hunt or shoot, if I do go out its later in the day. I have gone to ND several years on our opener. My dogs get to actually see some birds, and are then at top form when I get back.
