LaCrosse Pheasant Reports

Anyone have any local reports for pheasant numbers near LaCrosse. I have reviewed KDWP website. Just wondering if anyone had any local information.

second post.... asking for specific report... is this getting a little old to everyone else????

Luckydog... sorry to take my frustration out on your post. But why can't people go see for themselves?? Go find out when you get there, scout. ( trsut me i understand most people don't have the time or the funds to do that all the time)

And I'm sure your post regarding this was harmless and you are honestly just curious. But some really just get on here looking for a place to go. Or search looking for a place that has great reports.

So my .02 keep your info to yourself, if you have sucess in an area report the success, not the location. When you put a good deal of time and effort into finding places that are productive, its a kick in the junk to just see info being tossed out there like that about places.

Again nothing against you in general Luckydog

Well said rant Spence,
I know for sure that I wont be giving up any honey holes. I dont mind giving some info about a county but some people are trying to figure out the exact field to go to. The only way I have ever found a honey hole was by getting out there and walking the filed myself. If too much info is given out on sites like this it could totally wipe out an area of population.
Half of the fun of pheasant hunting is the "unknown". I dont know how many times I've gotten out of the truck and was sure I would get something out of that field and come out with a goose egg, vise versa, some fields I thought there is no way I'll get anything out of there and end up doing very well.

To sum it up, the best way to find a good field is to put boots on the ground!
Good luck everyone!

Sorry Luckdog, don't have any information on the LaCrosse area. If I had some information within a 50 mile radius, I would gladly tell you what I knew. The way I read it, asking for information about near LaCrosse isn't the same as asking for the GPS coordinates of the weedpatch that flushed 100 birds on opening morning of dove season.

Good luck.

ok say a guy has no idea where to go.... he see's great reports around a certin city in Kansas. Where do you think he is going to go??

I'm just saying i might as well not put any effort into scouting and miles on my truck and boots anymore. I'll just let everyone else do it for me.

And maybe its because I'm a duck hunter... the internet has ruined many good duck spots...

jumping in here

I third the motion about fishing for information. I'm from out of state (GA) and have logged thousands of road / boot miles by now across most of the entire cental and western part of the State. I enjoy seeing new areas and scouting for that next honey hole, and I keep good notes that I consult prior to each hunting season. I'd be happy to share a hunt with someone who has similarly put in the time and effort, and compare notes on past experiences. Giving the same information out just for asking is another story! All that being said, some of my most enjoyable hunts have been to out of the way WIHA spots where the larger parties might say why bother the drive for one or two hunting opportunities.

LD think if you narrow your search to more than "local information" you may be a bit better understood. Bird #'s are good in much of KS pheasant range as I'm sure you read on the KDWP website. Only a few counties were hit by storms and some of those will still have some good pockets....and most likely fewer hunters b/c of the report.

I can relate everyone's concern w/ naming specific towns. Seeing the thread that mentioned "Lewis" made my head throb. Then I'm reminded there are many towns in KS mentioned on the site. Eventually these new folks learn that the best information comes from the backroads and the fields.

im not gunna tell u where the birds are.. but i will say that the La Crosse area in genreal....as in the west central part of the state is prime pheasant country. i dont know what it looks like out there this, but i did make a trip out there last year and had great success. i would recommend getting out and scouting but with the season approching so fast, and u not exactly living near i assume.. but i plan on heading out on friday to do some scouting, be prepared to get up early saturday and head out otherwise you will be stuck driving seeing hunters already there. good luck , and have a safe trip.

you guys crack me up. Do you really think that someone that asks about bird numbers around LaCrosse really thinks that someone will tell them "the field to hunt"? On the contrary I think most folks are simply looking for the negative information. Such as when I asked about the Lewis area. I was and maybe LD was looking for something that may make him cancel his trip such as a major hail storm or a localized event that would impact the birds. Many out of state guys log a lot of miles and they are looking for as much info. before they make arrangements. The regional reports are already available so there would be no point to asking for that information. Careful folks asking about the harvest report or best restaurant to eat at since you will be attracting crowds. :)

I took the question to be fairly harmless, as Cheesey said. I don't have any specific knowledge of that area. if he were asking about areas I hunt, I would probably PM the guy, keeping my mouth shut on the public forum, or maybe not post at all. Didn't mom and your teachers tell you, "if you can't say anything nice... then don't say anything"! I will admit that when I see a post in several forums, like " I have two old feeble dogs, that I want to get into birds, where should I go?" posted in Ks. Neb. South Dakota forums. This is a blatant attempt to get someone to do his homework for him. The guy here, posting about LaCrosse has already been there, and probably knows where he's going, merely asking about regional conditions if there are locals who have knowledge.

I can say first hand I have never hunted kansas and put out a post when I first found this forum inquiring about it. I was looking to trying some where new and whanted to know if it was worth a 10 or 12 hour drive. just trying to get pointed in the right direction.

That's the beauty of a KS hunt. The "right direction" is W......basically W of Salina. 2/3 of the state holds huntable populations of roosters. 1/3 of the state holds good #'s of birds and those areas are laid out by KDWP. Again, I don't think people using this site as a tool is going to concentrate hunters anymore than the crowing index and/or the upland forecast. WIHA maps are also a contributing factor to pressure. Some areas will hold more birds and more hunters and on the other side of the coin, some areas will hold fewer birds and likely fewer hunters. I believe KS is worth a 12hr drive for any freelance upland enthusiast. Getting a bird or 2 can be done across much of the state. Getting a limit can be done by investing a great deal of time and effort, or just getting lucky.

I new enough to look at the reports and the atlas. The guys on here can give me info like what are the better times to come weather wise and areas you would run into sand burs thing like that, stuff that people that have never been there before dont think about. Hell I didn't know that you had to worry about rattle snakes in SD in some areas.

I don't hunt around the area you mentioned, but I do hunt in Western Kansas. I have hunted that area for several years and have done quite a bit of scouting during those hunts knowing that they could change by the next year (crop rotation, crp loss, etc..). I have been known to travel to areas and get a "bird's" eye view of what is going on in that area. I monitor weather reports throughout the year to try and determine the impact that snow, rain, ice, hail, and drought have on the bird populations. After the KDWP forecast comes out in September, I will call the road maintenance departments to get an idea of how the weather has affected that area in which I plan to hunt. This may be the best source of information if you an reach someone, a few times I have picked up additional acres from the person I talked to and rewarded them with case of beer (if appropriate) when I arrived to hunt. I hope this information helps you prepare for your hunt, your question did't offend me in the least!

as someone said, the same spot/area that was good last year may be poor this year, i have seen this many times, so any info is going to be suspect.
and sometimes areas with fewer birds and fewer hunters ends up being more rewarding, i take everything i read with a grain.....

also, as i have mentioned, calling or especially stopping in at a local CO-OP can be very rewarding, most often after the opening week of the season.

I don't see anything wrong with asking about info for a certain town. He wasn't asking for walk-in tract #'s or anyone's honeyholes. Not everyone can afford to drive out for a scouting trip, especially in this economy. If someone wants share info, that is their right.

Agreed! I don't see anything wrong with trying to get some general information about a specific area. I hope this board doesn't end up like NoDakOutdoors.....dying b/c of too much sensorship.
