This was in yesterdays paper. Hope it is accurate, but who knows until we hit the ground in Nov.

Kansas pheasant outlook

Preliminary data about the Kansas pheasant population looks encouraging.

The Department of Wildlife and Parksâ?? spring survey found bird numbers comparable to last year. Wildlife biologists and hunters will have a better look at what will be available this fall when Wildlife and Parks conducts a brood count survey in August to get a look at the strength of nesting success.

But biologists are encouraged by the results of the first survey

i never get excited until i read the bird survey, which doesn't even come out until around Sept. 20th....it seems to come out later every year!

It may be exiciting to read the surveys, but they tend to paint the picture a little good sometimes. True numbers are when I am in the field, but I can never say a hunt has been a bad hunt. Always a good time in the field!

Doesn't it feel that way though. I'm always thinking the same thing but I've started marking it on the calendar so I'll know and they're within a week or so every year. I don't trust the bird survey a great deal b/c it's too broad, but it does serve it's purpose as a general indicator.

I agree that the real answer to the question will be answered by us, but they do this more as advertising I believe. I have yet to see a report that reads "bird hunting sucks stay at home". Just thought I would put the article out there for all to see then assess for themselves. Something to do while it's hot! Take care of your dogs in this heat.

Have a great day!

They have got to get the out of stater hunters here somehow to spend their money at our hotels and restaurants. In my opinion pheasant hunting is the best attraction the state has from November to January. As mentioned above I wouldn't care if they said the hatch was horrible you could still find me and my dog out walking the CRP and Milo fields. Hope everyone is having a good summer.

@KickThemUp - "I have yet to see a report that says bird hunting sucks stay at home" - THAT'S FUNNY RIGHT THERE!!! :10sign:

STAY AT HOME is not in my vocabulary, so my four-legged friend & I will be out there alongside you guys trying our best to kick 'em up when another season comes around regardless! We'll see how it matches up with all the reports!

I've also heard some dang good in-the field fishing & bird-hunting "reports" over the years that gruntled "oh, a couple" in reply to the question "had any luck today". I have learned an awful lot by asking the follow-up question "mind if I take a peek in the bucket or pouch"...Have to confess, I've learned well from the masters how to give out a similar straight-faced/inner-chuckling reply myself while hiding a bulging bag behind the dog box or underneath the guns, cooler & shooting supplies! :D

tpically, every year, there will be some areas that are excellent, then you will find areas that disappoint. overall, there should be many decent huntable areas in Kansas, that seems to be the case every year. for the most part you just have to find them yourself......pretty simple really.

Hen, Hen, Rooster,
Your comment about the response "oh, a couple" made me laugh. Last year I was walking out of a milo field with 3 sets of tail feathers poking out of my vest when a truck pulled up and asked how the hunting was, my response was "It is tough, their aren't many birds this year", they gave me a wierd look and drove away, it was then I realized I had 3 birds visible! What they didn't understand was that was the only 3 birds I saw in that field after a couple hours of hunting it!

I can't help but be honest when they ask. I hope the best for every ethical group that enters the field, so I'm liberal with the info.

@KSbrit - C'mon now, you know us preachers, I was exaggerating a wee bit just for fun! :D What is not funny at all though, is give out too much info to the wrong person & they suddenly start showing up every day + tell a friend, & a friend tells a friend, tells a friend, friend, friend, friend...
I'm just a little careful & try to size up who it is I give out local hotspot info to, that's all (Heck, if I like 'em I might even ask 'em to join me).

@RuttCrazed - Your experience has mostly been my story so far too. I usually get my birds or at least a few honest cracks at 'em, but more days than not the pooch & I have to work hard for em' (sometimes all day & odd thing is I actually prefer it that way over an easy 1-2-3 early morning limit). :) I do have those days where the sky is filled with roosters (got up a couple hundred birds each in a couple 40 acre'ish patches more than once last year), but those very special experiences & places are few & far between & I do NOT share detailed info on those particular fields with anyone except the closest of friends!!! ;)

I understand your point completely. I'm discretionary as well. I hunt all over the state so I'm not so much worried about giving away the farm so to speak. If a line of trucks approach, I'm not saying anything! They already have the advantage of 10 or more guys so they can figure it out on their own. I was referring to the group of 3 hunters in one truck. If they're like me when in those very small groups, they need all the help they can get:thumbsup:

"Wee bit", C'mon now preacher, are you telling me that you only got a low grade in Exaggeration 101 in your first semester at preacher college? I find that hard to believe:)

Hen Hen Rooster musta liked me :D because he let me tag along once hello brother can't wait to go get after em again PM me when you get a chance!

@M.R.Byrd - Nice one, ya got me!!! :D :D :D The couple hundred birds boiling out of one patch ain't one iota of exaggeration though - "stack of bibles", "cross my heart", "needle in my eye" & all that good stuff...

@Recon - "My dog is getting (way too) fat" & so am I...Get that new pup solid on point & let's go-go, get-'em, get-'em!!! ...If everything works out just right, maybe we can even do some pointer/retriever tandem work with the pointer ranging out & holding 'em, & the lab sent in for the flushing work...Have been wanting to try out this 1-2 punch ever since I heard about it!

I had the same thing happen to me one time last year. I bagged four roosters in one small field so I had two birds on each side of the vest while walking back to the car. A truck load of road hunters wondered if I was seeing any birds? You don't want to give out too much information about your honey holes.

N.W. Kansas report

I have a good friend in N.W. Kansas who farms and drives a road grader for the county and he called me a couple weeks ago and said that he has seen more birds this year then he can ever remember the hens have had a second hatch and he thinks there having a third now. They have had great weather this year and had good carry over from last year.

He also said he has seen more quail this year then last year. He really got me pumped over the prospects of this season, we had a great season last year and he said this year is sizing up to be better.
