Just getting old?

Hi all, new here been reading awhile. Anyway I have a 10yo springer, she goes on walks, chases the ball, etc but over this past year has had to slow down on all, she loves to hunt, but after a short.hunt she wil be sore for a few days. I can see the poor girl hurts, have any of u had this? She just getting old? Indoor dog. This looks like a great place! Thanks all
 
Start giving her glucosime msm daily. For those individual days she is sore have the vet give you some Previcox. Be sure to carry some candy when she is activity and feed her that. Sled dogs operate under fat metabolism and take the physical exertion but you dog (like you) operate off a glycose/glycogen metabolism and can't switch over quick enough to avoid a "hole". I started giving my 11 year old chessie candy during hunts and have avoided the fall off in activity and the slumping around on the couch post hunt.

I would ask your vet about giving her Rimadyl. She probably has arthritis and the Rimadyl will help he a lot.

Had dozens of springer get to that stage in their life. Have one that is now 13 she spends most of her day on the "Barkalounger". She was a fine working dog in her day.
Gloucosomine will help, though you will not see a huge change in her energy levels or gimping about after a work-out. Taking some weight off will be you best deal.
Just enjoy her last years and remember the great things you did together..
Oh yea and start a new pup it's the best tonic I know of for you..
 
Abbydog sounds like your girl is just aging. I would take her to the vet to make you last years with you painfree. I'm sure she enjoys your company more than anything on the Earth. I have to agree with Gundogguy starting a new pup now would be great medicine for you and maybe your four-legged friend as well. She might be able to give the young pup some pointers and even make her feel young again...just a thought.
 
I have a 12 year old border collie that started showing signs of arthritis 3 years ago. The vet prescribed Tramadol for pain managment and Duramax once a day. The Duramax is a anti-inflammatory. I give the old man a Tramadol if I mess up and throw the ball to often. She also suggested Science Diet JD. It is heavy in glucosamine. He has been on it for a few years and is still getting around pretty good.

Agreed. Rimadyl or Duramax, both prescription NSAIDS work well. You do have to monitor their kidney function if used long term, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives. As was state, you might also inquire about Tramadol which is basically just a pain reliever and works well too for those bad days.

Most likely the dog has some arthritis as many do as they get older. I think Glucosamine and MSM are worth a try at least.

The other thing to remember about arthritic dogs is to keep them as active as you can. Just letting them lie around and being inactive is NOT good and only causes more stiffness. Use the pain meds while keeping them as active as can be is the way to treat Arthritis.

Ive started giving mine Glucosimine and the oldest is going to be seven. I have one with a bad hip so that's why he's getting it.
It can't hurt, and it's relatively cheap.

I take mine dogs to Blue Hills for routine things like shots, meds. I go to K-State for serious things. They have a lot of studies going on. I have my older dog in one. They check his vitals, run blood work, and pay me $10. He is on anti-inflammatory meds long term. Blue hill wants blood work every six months to check his liver, so the study at KSU covers that.
Blue Hills does good work.
