Is there a demand for no frills hunting lodge in Winner?

That Super 8 in Miller is nothing to brag about. It gives the franchise a bad name. And their laundry mat connected with it is even worse.

We always camp out at Lake Louise State Recreation Area when we're hunting in the area around Miller. Good fishing in the lake too.

My nephew and I are splitting a room (Super 8), west river, for $30 each. Breakfast is included - waffles, cereal, toast, juice, coffee et al and we can have the dogs in if necessary. I bring sandwiches from home and dinner is out.

This is about as reasonable as I can find! Not sure a private home/house can compete with this arrangement!

Former manager at the Miller S.8 went to jail for fraud...several years ago.

I'd rather camp out any day then super 8 it free breakfast or not lol ....

If u want to see guys from across the united states & chat with them & watch guys rambo around the park swings with guns go to ol guns spot its a zoo 1st month daily Wonder why???

Hmm camp-out, below zero, with a SD wind and snow. Doesn't appeal to this hunter! Perhaps I'm missing something with the camp-out routine.

You just have to know how to hunt it. Go where others fear to tread. ;)

Actually, when hunting in the Miller area we use Lake Louise as a base camp. Sometimes we drive up to an hour to hunt our favorite little patches of public lands. Hunting roadside ditches never appealed to me. Miller is only one of several areas we set up camp with our TT.

I might be from PA, but we certainly are not strangers to SD. In fact we will be out in SD from the start of Labor Day weekend until sometime in November. :)

I've been watching at this thread with interest.

I bought my house for pheasant hunting December 2014.

I finished the basement and put in a nice bathroom, new carpet, new mattresses and sheets, new leather recliners in living room, new dining room chairs, totally furnished the house with nice amenities and hunting/fishing decor.

Bought extra fridge and freezer. Built a super nice dog barn and kennels. Fully furnished kitchen with everything including waffle iron, new dishwasher, etc. Made a nice game room with pool table, poker table, foosball table and chess board. Boot dryers for all guys. Have a gun safe and valuables safe. I don't do anything half assed. I made the place the way I would like to stay in when I go hunting.

I have WiFi, cable TV, electric, natural gas, water/sewer, mortgage, insurance, taxes and lawn care that I pay for year around. I donated a weeks stay hunting for a cancer fund raiser for a guy I new. I donated lodging to a local officer's out of town family to attend his funeral.

IMG_3577_zpsoaxi7clk.jpg

I pay a lady to clean the house and do laundry between guests ($20/hr) and watch the place when no one is there.

I'm there in November hunting. I furnish three meals each day. I'm a great cook so you eat way better than at the local cafes. Big breakfast, packed field lunch and a superb dinner. It's nice when guys appreciate my efforts and help clean up after meals.

Public hunting is good in a 40 mile radius. I hunt 90% public land. I limit each day and I don't pay to hunt private. I enjoy driving and scouting for places to get birds. I don't party hunt with big groups. I hunt little spots most guys drive past. I kill lots of pheasants and post photos because I don't bull$ht guys.

I rented houses all over east river SD with friends before I bought this house. They were "okay" yet mine is way nicer.

I can't even come close to break even with guys wanting to pay $35-50/night. WiFi, cable TV, electric, natural gas, water/sewer, mortgage, insurance, taxes, lawn care, snow removal, maintenance and cleaning lady adds up.

I upped my price a little from last year ($75/night) to $90/night and $125 with three meals per day for 2016. I think these prices are a bargain for what you get. Hate to say, but I don't want "cheap guys" since they don't respect nice things. I don't want to cater to rich guys since they can go to resort hunting lodges with acres of land, habitat and surround standing crops for a shoot. I made a place for hunters such as myself who enjoy good times afield, hunt proficiently, care for their dogs and appreciate a comfortable house full of amenities with good meals.

Most of the guys were great. A few stole my deluxe boot dryers ($50 each), left bird guts in the kitchen trash compactor, spit sunflower seeds in the bedroom waste baskets, messy kitchen, slimy refrigerators, bloody bird freezer, broke a couple things, let dogs in the house when rules specifically request dogs stay in the barn kennel. They also left my indoor bird cleaning area filthy.

I don't know how they live at their own houses but I could not use or leave a place like some used mine.

I love pheasant hunting with my dogs. I love coming to my own house to enjoy for a month. I like having old friends stay with me and also making new friends with similar interests.

Last year was an experience of mostly good and some bad. I didn't buy this house to make money. I rent it to supplement my annual house expenses. Having renters in for about six weeks will never be a moneymaker.

I love hunting South Dakota so that is why I have it.

Wow.... lighten up. Remember you are representing your company when you post....

Really, you sure its a guy? The poster is long gone in case you had not noticed.

Wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. Just a friendly reminder that your tone wasn't necessarily a good reflection on your business. It's easy to get worked up (trust me I've been there too) on these forums. Best of luck.

Ya know? As a consumer, you get what you pay for. From looking at the website if you pay to go to Uguide's place, it looks like you get a choice of several different properties to hunt. They get hunted by others but not sandpapered like common public ground. The lodging is probably pretty awesome. The ameneties are probably pretty good as well. You probably kill quite a few pheasants. And they point you in a good direction and leave you alone. From looking at earlier posts in the habitat forum it looks like they do habitat work all year long to improve the various properties. So yeah, you're gonna pay for all of that unless you got some good samaritan willing to lose a crapload of money every year. If you go to dukxdog's place, again you get a nice place to stay, dog's taken care of. But from what I can tell you're on your own for finding hunting spots. Public, or find someone to pay to play. So $90 bucks a night to stay in a nice house close to hunting grounds. $125 to add 3 meals a day. Hell Yes!! $10 bucks/meal. So you pay for what you get is my point. We stay in a house in Kansas too when we go and its 25 a night. Its a craphole, but, TV, kitchen, sleeps 10, my dogs sleep inside too. Worth it, but if someone came in and cleaned or cooked for me. No problem paying more. When l finally do get motivated to go up to south dakota I will stay at dukxdogs place. Simply because I dont do the big group thing. I only hunted with 5 people once last year. Every other time it was 2 or 3 or solo. If I was into the group thing I would do up Uguides place. They both sound like good deals to me. But for a shack in town. 25-30 a night maybe all you get. And maybe all its worth. Childhood home or not.

You get what you pay for is right.

Hunters are as varied as their finances. Many are satisfied with less and still others can't afford more. There is a need for all types of lodging. But I get the impression from the tone of some of the comments, commercial operators don't like competition from less costly alternatives.

Not at all. Forum strength is based on good content and correct posting. Not commercial operators spamming the forums. Especially those that do not financially support this website on a monthly basis.

I believe there are policies about commercial posting from non sponsors.
