Irritated Dog Eyes

My Brittany's eyes frequently get quite irritated from a day of hunting, especially in these dry, dusty conditions. I have an eye ointment from the vet that seems to work quite well but it's a little pricey. I was wondering if anyone has an over-the-counter product that works well for soothing and healing those scratchy irritated eyes.
 
No medicine, Zeb, but I have sometimes carried some saline solution in an old Visine dispenser. Young Bert would manage to get stuff in his eyes from time-to-time.
 
i've used Puralube ointment in the past for dogs that really had irritated eyes on a multi-day hunt. At the end of the day, just pull the lower lid down and put a little bit on the inside of the lower lid and gently rub it in to spread around the entire eye. This is non prescription (light mineral oil) and works better than eye wash for really irritated eyes. Just make sure to get any debris out first if there is any.

Otherwise just use an eye wash such as this available at most pharmacies.

Yep, give it a try, it certainly won't hurt. Be careful not to touch the tip of the applicator on the eye lid itself.

Irritated eyes are a frequent issue for our gun dogs, especially out in your country, but anywhere really. Dogs running through cover all day can pick up all manner of dust, dirt, pollen, weed seeds, grass awns, parts of weeds or crops, etc etc in their eyes.

I keep a couple of bottles of OTC saline solution and gauze pads in my vet kit. After every hunt, training session, etc the dogs get a tailgate exam to catch any issues early. Then I flush out their eyes with saline, wipe and repeat. You may be surprised just how much various gunk is flushed out!

Save the vet supplied eye ointment ( antibiotic, etc) for an actual eye inflammation ie conjunctivitis. Hope this helps.

Just so you know, Puralube is NOT an antibiotic, nor is it prescription. It's a light mineral oil for the purpose of extremely dry and irritated eyes. Eye wash will work most of the time but for especially irritated eyes the purilalube seems to do a better job.
