Interesting Occurrence

We were walking a WIHA with some creek bottoms in it just north of Dodge the other day. We had walked through one drainage and I found a bottom with some open water so I headed my dogs down it for a drink. About that time one of the boys with me hollered and said he had found a deer with only the skull plate removed just up the hill. I proceeded with my dogs to the bottom of the creek and commented to my buddy about the great deer trail we were on.

This is where it gets weird. I got almost to the bottom and I hear my buddy say, "sorry sir, did not see you there." I look up and there is a guy in a very short ladder stand with a bow just up the bank from me, staring at us. He never said a word. I call my dogs and start back up the bank and as I look back I see another person trying to hide behind a tree from us in some dark clothes but with an orange toboggan. Meanwhile, my other friend walks up and says it looks like that deer must have been taken illegally. I get his attention and we get out of there. Still not sure what was going on, but it was a little spooky and somewhat odd.

Just thought I would share that.

In another matter, the Dodge City Chief of Police has come under investigation for possible wildlife violations. Details of the investigation have not been made public yet.

birdman, please do not associate me with poachers. I would not consider a poacher a hunter. They are of a different breed. yes the whole hunting community recieves a bad rap from poachers and I don't want them thinking that poachers are legitiment hunters. We all know that they are not legit, so don't call them hunters.

I 2nd that poachers are not hunters but thieves that steal from all of us.

It would be like calling a thief that broke into your home a visitor.

where did i say YOU were a hunter and i hate you for poaching?

i said there are HUNTERS that do POACH. i did NOT point my finger at you.

ive run in to pheasant hunters that hunted MORE than pheasants without a proper liecense. THOSE are the ones i talk about.

once before, there was a case in Tripp County that they found 12 deer hides stashed away in a dirt road colvert... thats the kind of poachers i hate.

poaching is still a form of hunting. just an illegal way of doing it without paying for a license. ive seen NICE hunters and dedicated ones still poach here and there.

heck there was a BIG hunting lodge that got fined and jailed for poaching ELK. they had a license to hunt one in their county, just didnt have one to hunt in the next county over where they found one.. they paid for the tag, but their ELK they wanted wandered on to the next county and they shot it, even though they are loyal hunters, paid for their tag, they shot the elk in the wrong county.

My opinion: When someone poaches, they cease being a hunter, regardless of the quarry being in-season, having a license, etc. Poachers are thieves, plain & simple & are totally devoid of ethics.

i wont disagree they shouldnt be called a hunter.. but you all are loyal hunters when you do it legally.

however poachers were still hunters regardless... sorry.. its reality

Unfortunately for the hunting sports, poachers are associated with hunters. I wish that it weren't so.

That would be an "undocumented" visitor...:p and you should welcome him w/ open arms.

I agree with most of you guys about this. Hunters or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to do stuff. What is really frustrating is that they not only steal game, they also create a stereotype for those of us who do it the right way. We are then guilty by association, in the eyes of the public, landowners, heck, even anti-hunting groups! Realy hacks me off! But, there is something we all CAN do. Hold yourself to a higher standard, and always remember that perception is reality to the perceiver. Do whats right, and remember, it's what you do when no one's lookin' that tells what kind of person you really are. Later taters

+1 Nice Job Stacey

Talked with a Wildlife Officer again today, they are working on this. We did not see a vehicle or anything so not a lot of info, but he was going to get back in the area and see if he found anything else. Very nice, professional officer. Said there were many reported cases of deer with skull caps or heads only removed.

I have found deer before with only the heads or skull caps removed. It makes me sick. What a waste.

In this case, one can only hope that the deer was taken legally, since it is still bow season. Maybe the guy realized it was too heavy to drag all the way to his truck so he took the antlers off and then ran home to get a sled to make it easier to drag the rest of it out. That's plausible. Maybe he was afraid if the didn't take the rack right away somebody would steal it while he was gone. I dunno....
