I will be making my first trip to SD with my 11 y/o Vizsla. I plan on hunting 5 days with a day driving each way. I live in the UP of MI. I am looking at camping in chamberlain and hunting public land. there will be 1 dog with 2-4 hunters. Any hints, tips, offers to meet up (as I am sure my 11 y/o wouldnt mind a break here and there) ect would be greatly appreciated. Most likely looking at arriving the 23rd of october and starting to hunt on the 24th.

5 days with an 11 year old dog is going to be more than that dog can handle unless you have some very short hunting days.

I know it might be a stretch for him but he does hunt daily in the grouse woods and I usually hunt all morning let him rest in the truck for an hour while we drive to another area and hunt until dusk. so hunt 4 rest 2 hunt 4. Or so abouts a week of that and he is spent but handled it pretty well last year. If he is spent then we will walk the fields while he rests.

That is a hunt I've been tossing around in my head awhile seen to many PF shows pump that same hunt I guess lol. I also camp & hunt I mite be out in SD that early if so id be willing to share a hunt with ya are u 100% stuck on Chamberlain? It gonna get hit hard the week prior due to hhighest #s of ringneck in state & close to I-90 ez access to tons of hunters from states with Lil to no pheasant...

I'd like to hunt Chamberlain but have a back up plan lol I have some spots I've seen birds turkey hunting... Prairie chicken sharptail grouse & pheasant... Far enuff away the dog can rest on way back to Chamberlain lol. I am interested in this hunt for sure...

I have a 4.5 female she will be 4.5 Oct

Hunt your dog last few hours for sure rest em in heat if day & or work sloughs creeks with water etc. That another downside of Oct hunting way cooler in November man & dogs can hunt longer...

My group will be hunting east of Chamberlain the same week. We'll have 2 - 4 hunters with a young GSP and a seasoned English Pointer. It will be our first trip to SD also. There's a possibility we'll meet up. I'll PM you guys before we leave.

Shoot 1 this way also I'm seriously toss n the idea around in my head that following WK end Iowa pheasant opens & I'll be trying that state out but need the dog on as many birds as I can b4 mid November...

Wear u guys coming from the south if I remember correctly???

You bet SMO, We'll be closer to your side the first part of the week.

More hunters in the east population bigger east of Chamberlain...

I'm hoping to hook up with festeraeb & his buddy maybe 1 day we do a UPH hunt in that Chamberlain area... High # of guys hit around Platte SD I'm trying to avoid that area...

Been a good number of years but the public land around Chamberlain used to get pounded. The high bird counts and good local accommodations drew in lots of out-of-state hunters. Best spots for holding birds back then were close to the river and not easy to get to.......

I know Chamberlain get hammered bad I plan to not hunt them big areas if I can avoid it ... Talked with like 8+ guys on line or in person who all hunted around Platte guys from like 4+ states & the surrounding towns looks good but way to close to Mitchell SD & Platte SD for me I hope west river I can find someplace not as beaten down? Or I need to rent a boat

Do you think it might be worth bringing the boat to hunt from the shore of the river?

Not the right guy to ask as I never tried it. Does seem to be some decent concentrations of Corp and other public property up and down the river but how practical it is to hunt by boat I can't say.

Everything I hunted along the river was accessible by truck but sometimes took some walking to find decent pheasant cover. The back-up plan each of the two years I hunted the area was always ditch hunting the last couple of hours of the day. Usually did it east river and south of I-90 (often well south). Some of the un-mowed minimum maintenance roads were actually a pretty good hunting experience.
