How many dogs do you hunt with?

I like to hunt with 3 dogs (2 pointers and 1 retriever). Most people I talk to about this think that I am crazy to have more than 1 dog. I try to explain how each dog is important and that I contribute my success to having these dogs.

I am just curious how many others use?
 
When I hunt with a couple of my friends we can have 6 dogs down with 3 guns.

I got a new pup this fall, who is be ready to hunt with other dogs next year. So when I am hunting on my own, I will have 2 dogs down when hunting.
 
Mainly 3, 2 are too young. I switch off between dogs different days and hunt with just one at a time. If I have some one with with out a dog I take 2. None get too beat up this way and they all get to have fun. Just ends up that none of them know who is going to be lucky and go on a day when I actually hit something.:D
 
I usually hunt with just one dog down, and rotate them. Any time I go hunting I try to give at least two different dogs the opportunity to work though. What I'll do is plan my hunt so that at about the midway point I end up near the vehicle and can swap dogs. I do have two females that do a pretty good job working together, so lately I've been letting them work together and it's worked well. But, for the most part I find one dog down at a time to be the most enjoyable way for me.
 
When I hunt alone, it's just one dog.
With the wife, it's 2 (mine and hers)

With friends, it can be up to 8 guns and 10 dogs, or any combination.
 
Just one right now. Thinking of getting another one. Been looking at the Braque du Bourbonnais as my next one to get to go with my gsp.

I mainly hunt alone, so as many Dogs as I can fit in the truck. The more dogs the merrier is my motto. Pack training and hunting is a great experience, if you’re willing to trust the dogs.

We hunt with whatever we brung.:D The most I've ever hunted with was 4 dogs by different owners. I'm excited about next season having two dogs of my own that I can hunt together. I did it some this season, but the pup is still pretty young and follows the older dog about 1/3 of the time.

Some time I would really love to tag along with somebody like you, OKIEGunner, who hunts a big pack of dogs. I bet it is a lot of fun to watch all those dogs zipping around!:thumbsup:
 
I like to hunt with two dogs, I try to space the ages out a few years so that I always have one that is able to teach the younger dog.

I have never hunted with a pack of dogs, but that does sound interesting.
 
If you can admit how many you own, without fear of recrimination, you don't have enough! I use dogs for extra hunters, keeps the pheasants confused trying to keep track of all the dogs. May sound odd but in 160@ of rank CRP, it works to get easy shots at birds afraid to move, or pinned between three or more dogs.
 
When by myself, I usually use 2 but can go as high as 4 without my head twisting off. With more guys, it is easy to take more. We've had as high as 9 out with 3 hunters. Had 7 on point or backing at one time that day. As said above, when the roosters are running, putting more dogs down can really even the odds. If the birds are busting on their own way out front, it's better to go with fewer dogs.

I agree, in decent cover I seem to get more birds pointed and held with more dogs down. I suspect that the birds just don't know where to run with all the dogs flying around.
 
these 4- sometimes 3 if the old lady isn't up to it- actually should take one at a time sometimes- perhaps tomorrow

first field a few nice points/backs- let a rooster go- went to another field- all 4 down- decided I'd take a rooster if nicely held and backs-

Toad- perhaps you get OkieGunner to come up- you show him arround a bit-
I'd be out and about- maybe drop these in with his- that would be how many dogs backing

I like usually hunting one at a time. I think a young dog learns most when out on their own and they have to do the work. If on a trip somewhere though i usually run 2 so they all get good exposure

I've started every pup with a real good adult and never have had a problem dog- can't understand how you do a youngster alone and yet get it to run a different pattern, handle when you do get it out with another or more dogs, honor, not fight for a bird, learn what it means to be with another dog, have maners under the excitement

these two hunted together since she was 4 months old in pheasants- her brother hunted with his mom- last day of their first season it was 4 down for a 2 hour hunt- it changed them, gave them confidence, showed them that honoring was important and that they were honored- now I have 4 that are pretty equal- can hunt with any good pointing dog-

how do you teach your young pointing dog maners so you can take it hunting with someone who has a real good pointing dog
