Been out of town for a while do to untimely death in family need to get out this weekend to walk it off. How do the fields look, snow conditions that kind of stuff.
Was out over the past weekend - there is some snow in the fields - fairly easy walking though.. saw plenty of fresh tracks.. The roads were fine, saw fresh tracks... Plenty of hunters.. plenty of fresh tracks.. scarce on birds to shoot at.. saw plenty of fresh tracks..
they were there - somewhere... saw plenty of fresh tracks..
Sorry about your loss Ringmaster. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.
Got out yesterday for a great day in the field. Met up with Pair-o-labs (great guy, fun to hunt with and a pup that's full of energy. Thanks Tom!) and headed out to my favorite piece of heaven south of Yuma. It was cold in the morning but me, Tom and our pups warmed up quickly. There was about an inch of fresh powder on the ground and the vegetation was covered in ice but with a slight breeze blowing the conditions were fine. Most of the snow from last weekend had melted and the fresh stuff proved to us that the birds were there in numbers. Tracks all over the place. Most of the roosters flushed just out of range but there were a few that waited for us to sneak up on them. Two of them decided to come home with us. The hens are holding tighter then the roosters but you can still bring home some table fare with a well placed shot.
The forcast is for some snow this weekend and you know you'll always have a breeze. My advise to you, and it's just my two cents, use a full choke and #4 or 5 shot, work into the wind and work slow. You should be able take a few birds home. Good luck.
Hunted north of Flemming today. Windier than hell!!! Barely a skiff of snow in the morning, not much to speak of by the end of the day. Managed 3 between me and Dad.
Spooky, spooky, spooky.
We managed 6 today out of 4 guys around Yuma, they were some track stars, but still getting some nice points with Jake, I did a video of Jake in a wheat field, hope it turns out, he had a few points in it, very fun day...
Ringmaster-hope you get a chance to get out this weekend as there are plenty of birds around. Sneaking up on them is often difficult this time of year. As Sig_Mech said, work quietly and into the wind.
Sig_Mech-thanks for taking me out to some of your hard earned private property relationships. Logan and I had a great time. We each had two flushes in range but Sig shot better and his black lab Oakley found both birds. I missed one and dropped one but the four of us couldn't find it in the waist high switchgrass. Rats. It was a pleasure hunting with you and Oakley and I owe you a ride back out there before the end of the season so pick a date.
We hunted walk-ins in Sedgwick Co yesterday and this morning, it was tough. The birds were really wild, only a couple flushes in range, some birds running and never seen (a bit of snow this morning made that apparent) and some flushing hundreds of yards away. There are still some on the walk-ins we hit but it'll probably take a bunch of snow or something to hold them. It's end-of-season conditions... still fun to get after them.
Ditto on what has been said, and have to add the wind was terrible north of Cheyenne Wells. Its amazing how hard these little rascals can accelerate with a 50 mph tailwind. Even some of my honey holes didn't produce. Places the had 50-100 birds 10 days ago had 5-10 Saturday. Made the ones we got more rewarding. I might try one more time before giving up for the year since we been pretty spoiled up to this point, does make it hard to get excited when you see so few birds. Drop 'em, Rob.
I was out this past monday and three of us managed to bring home six birds. It was a great day. We took advantage of the opportunities we had. For some reason, the birds held just tight enough to give us a few shots.
My buddies were out yesterday and came home with NOTHING! They saw birds, but everything was flushing out of range. Good luck to everyone. Only one week left.
My brother and I were also out over this past weekend. Windy conditions, dry weather and more hunters than usual made for tough conditions. Very happy to see a small bit of snow on the ground sunday. Managed three with other chances. All on WIA. Didn't see any huge flushes as earlier. We did see something don't know if anyone else has run into this. Two different fields we found nests with eggs. Seems like an odd time of year for this. Didn't really exam too closely. Left them alone. Might have been old.
