How do you Dove hunt

Sunflower fields with mowed lanes or either corn or wheat stubble.

Put a mojo dove out in an area without high grass or weeds so doves feel comfortable and where it will be seen and you can stay somewhat hidden. Usually put a few regular decoys on the ground under the mojo.

You'll shoot some doves dropping right in the decoy and others just passing by.

Does anyone walk to flush hunt them

If I'm on a sunflower field and it's just me or maybe a couple guys I know we'll walk it if nothing is flying

Most the time in grain stubble they'll fly to far out once they've been hunted. If you can use terrain to get the sneak on them it can be fun as hell.

Pass shooting between the roost and feed. You find a good flight path and shoot while the fly over head at top speed, it's good fun and you'll see lots of guys taking ridiculous shots.:D

The key is a good quality beer..... essential right?

Coors light and good quality beer don't really go together lol. We are usually done by 8:00 am or so so we don't do a whole lot of beer drinking most of the time.

The fact that lazer thinks colors light is indeed a very disturbing thought. If it don't come over on a boat it's not worth drinking. Now stay on topic people.

By the way lazer consider this your warning for violating section

Haha. Moe is dropping the hammer.

I don't know that a beer has to come over on a boat to be good though. I'll take a nice cold Firestone or Sierra Nevada, California makes the best beer.

Got 54 acres of 30 foot wide newly established that is pretty much bare ground. I think a guy could cleanup walking those but there are not alot of dives around right now and I can only think some cool weather pushed birds out of the area.

We are going to give it a try tonight as weather is looking good.

Got the new extra power spring in the benelli so will see how it works on light loads.

Another good place is to find a wheat field where there has recently been some dry pack cattle manure spread. Shot 1 short of a limit this am in a field just like that. Going back out tonight with just the dog to get him some more work as my buddies shoot.

where i shoot em'

most of my dove are harvested around trees, during the heat of the day, dove will seek out the shade and protection. I rarely find a field that they are feeding in often enough to pass shoot. I sometimes will walk a field and have a number of time had my dogs point a dove, flush and shoot it but mostly the dove don't like getting pointed and flush wild, usually with no shot at all

cheers

I went out Saturday and had a cut sunflower field to myself. Posted just inside what was left standing and shot a few. I saw three land in the other end of the field and decided to see if I could walk them up. Got two and two more as I skirted the field back to the stool. Did that every 45 minutes or so to keep the birds moving. Came home with 14.

We usually wait till after supper and sit by a water hole with 2 mojo's going. Those mojo's might be the best tool for a dove hunter! We have had good luck so far, about 100 doves in freezer waiting for a husker game feast.

In the evening starting about six sit by a farm pond that the doves can approach on the ground (they do not drink in flight); remain seated (on a bucket, stool, etc.) while you shoot because they flair off if you stand up. I wear camo too but I am seated in the open. I shoot no. 8s through cylinder and skeet chokes on a 12 gauge.

That's how I've been hunting this year. The mojo is very effective. I've even used a mojo dove out teal hunting and had good success.

I have had success walking up doves in the past. It's very dependent on cover height and wind speed. Best results come from milo stubble or wheat stubble that hasn't been worked. They prefer the more open areas like combine tracks, areas where the header was low, or areas where the grain cart or truck pulled up along side the combine to take some grain. You're looking for a mix of the open areas where they feel safe with just enough height around to provide some concealment for you. A little wind to create some cover noise helps a lot in trying to get close to them--as long as you walk into the wind.

Never tried to get a point; I don't usually bother hunting doves with my dog. It's too hot and she's not that great of a retreiver.

My favorite dove hunting is the evening waterhole.

OK Lazar I hope you are not drinking that swill while you are hunting. Its just asking for someone to get shot. LOL

Moes right that just rocky mountain Piss water. LOL

OK dove hunting Drive to a dairy that have a ton of silage. Get 1/4 Mile away and load up. Watch flight after flight fly by. And shoot them coming in. :D

While on my last trip to MT it would have been easy to limit on doves by just walking the brushy coulees. There are tons of Mourning doves in that country in early Sept and not all that wild or hard to hit. Locally hatched and not hunted.
I shoot a few but grouse are the main target.
