How can people be so stupid?

I did everything I could to keep my puppies healthy and safe, vet checks for Daisy when she was pregnant, health check for pups at 6 weeks, first vaccs, screened all potential owners, new owner contract etc. My favorite male pup went to what I thought was a great family, father was a church pastor, nice mom and an 18yr old daughter who I could tell loved the pup from first sight. Pup was coming along great and was already hunting well at 6 months.

Then I get a call. "Has Buster been vaccinated for parvo?" I explained all pups had their first puppy vaccs at 8 weeks and liked stated in the contract they signed follow up vaccs were their responsibility, I even had dates on when they should be. It turns out Buster had been sick for 3 days and they hadn't even taken him to the vet. I'm sad to say Buster didn't make it.

I called right then for an appt to get Daisy spayed because I knew I could never do that again.

To top it off I sent pics to everyone who has one of our pups of my Lb and Buddy and asked for progress reports and pics of everyones pups. I guess I forgot to remove Busters family from my email list because a few days later I got a call asking if Buddy needs a home. I lost it, are you serious? One of my pups already does because of your stupidity, I would never let you have another one of my puppies. The nerve of them to even ask.

How can seemingly great people be so dumb? You pay $450 for a pup and don't even bother getting it vaccinated? I can't believe that.

Sorry, I had to vent.

It's reaaly stupid but it seems that some people just don't get it. Sorry to hear of your loss but it's not your fault, hang in there.

QH,

Sorry to hear about this. You did all the right steps as a responsible breeder in order to mitigate potential issues with the puppy owner. The fact is; Some people just are not meant to be dog owners!

Sorry to hear that. As stated some folks, even "nice" folks are too stupid/too inconvenienced/too busy to have any pet. Good response to the follow-up phone call.

This is refreshing to hear from a breeder. Very sad to hear about the pup and the ignorance. But like someone said, even nice people can do a bad job at something like raising a pup. I hope this doesn't keep you from ever doing a breeding again because we need good breeders like you for the future of the dogs.

Sadly I see that kind of thing almost everyday in practice. The hardest part of veterinary medicine is the mammal at the top of the leash. I assume your original "How can people be that stupid" question is rhetorical.

I interview my buyers as best I can. Will not sell a pup without at least two conversations. We hand out a lot of info too.
Currently there is a discussion among vets re natural immunity vs early vaccination. 7 weeks or ten? I used to vaccinate before I delivered pups. I now make it clear that it is up to the new owner and please contact your vet for their advice.
A like discussion goes on re when should the dog go out?Best to get out with the new human and socialize promptly or stay with the pack up to ten weeks? Of course in reality, not everyone picks up their pup on the same day and I may have a pup around for 4 months. No bother---I like having a pup around. Not a problem with Pudelpointers right now. My waiting list always has about ten people on it.

Please feel free to chime in.
