Horror show continues

Those who malign other states for over optomistic assessment of the quail and pheasant population sure won't have any complaint with Missouri Dept. of Conservation. I believe they could count more mountain lions than quail per mile. The gloom of recent years continues. Less birds statewide except for the NW where extremely modest and almost statiscally meaningless gains where made. Bird hunters now way under 20,000 statewide, average around 5.4 days and 1.2 birds per trip. I assume like me, most of you are basically excercising our dogs at home and actually hunting somewhere else! Report on the MDC web sight, by Beth Emmerich.

i think MDC hangs their hat on deer and turkey hunting, it's perfect for them, they don't have to do a damn thing, the proliferation of those species is natural.

Really a shame. I used to really enjoy chasing roosters across northern mo. and southern Iowa. It was close to my house and always a good hunt. I had the chance to hunt a section of grass in nw mo. that rivals anything I have ever hunted. Really a shame. North east kansas is no better.

We always had a lot of great waterfowl hunting. What's out of control is the turkey, deer, and now, our newest attraction, elk. Seems we can spend money on anything but quail.

took the dogs out early saturday before it got too hot, went to a ca area and ran into a covey counter he did not here any that morning, he told me he had a couple of designated points he checked out, this is a big area whetstone, also gets a lot of pressure, they have left a lot of growth, in other words some covies will probably never be found, the dog can hardly get thru it. anyway with the ca state wide report which is bascally the mail route people, there are just not very many fence rows by farmers left therfore they aren't going to see the birds like they used to. anyway back to the covey counter, he said they didn't start until oct first.
i do all my hunting on public grounds and a corp lake so i don't think my count is not accurate(i hope),
he told me last year on one of his spots he had 5 covies he could here. i only found two of them.

so get up and out to your spots before daylight and see if you here anything

i am going twice this week i hope to do so

went out before daylight on saturday, heard two different covies, bad news went to two other spots and didn't here any . ran the dogs in different areas didn't find anything, at least they are getting ready.

many states are like that. We're in a deer and turkey era right now. Maybe because as a general rule they dont need CRP to grow their numbers. Big woods were there last year and most likely will be there 5 years from now.
At least its cheap to hunt as a resident if you choose to. I have to go to other states and hunt as a NR at thats what really gets expensive. I should've moved a 1/4 mile N into WI. Not sure what I was thinking at the time

Sounds like you boys are going to have to band together and let your voices be heard. There is strength in numbers, and you can make a difference! The great news is that you still have a wild quail population with which you can work from, many states are not that lucky.
