Here's a common report on any fakebook hunting page.

"Me and 12 buddies just limited out 10 days in a row. Birds everywhere. Hunted a mix of public and private land/outfitter. They really have the habitat out here in N/S Dakota. Done every day by noon, except the days we were done by 10:15. Can't get enough of these wild birds."

When questioned about the veracity of their heritage, and whether a few of the birds may have came from the same suppliers of KFC, Chick Fil-A, or Tyson, it's a definite no, they were assured 100% hatched in a local hayfield pheral pheasants. A statement they and their "guide" feel brooks no argument.... Oh Lord:sneaky:

Now I know better than to go on the pheasant hunting phakebook pages.

First off I don’t have 12 buddies
Secondly we all know how it happened

Years ago when my oldest son was in scouts, we had a scout leader like that. At the time I had a couple good dogs and it was still a big deal to hunt the kansas opener. I had access to some great crop/ Crp grass in north kansas towards nw. While we had always done well there, it was declining and wasn’t what it once was. Every year he would ask how we did. There were usually 6-7 of us, a mixture of fathers and sons. Usually we would harvest 12-15 birds in a hard weekend. He hunted with his rich father and would always pompously respond that they had shot a hundred or better with 10-12 guys. I questioned whether they were wild and he assured me they were. When I asked where they were he told me not only the same county but nearly the same couple square miles. I would just smile and say that’s awesome. I’m not sure he even knew.

I'm never sure what bugs me more, the guys who are in denial about their tame chicken shoot or the guys who know that every bird in South Dakota is pen raised. Social media is such a toilet bowl of information, but sometimes I can't help but stare at the metaphorical dumped mud in wonder.

Long ago I have simply learned to ignore the guys in our community that travel to SD and hunt the big-name lodges ...

Same is all to true for whitetails and elk. So many of those big antlered bucks and bulls are killed in high fence operations I essentially have no care (or respect) to see another one ... in this day and age - any nonresident tag filled with a B&C buck or bull should be viewed with a high level of distrust.

So, in the examples above ... yes, I chose to ignore and if put in my face without my permission ... yes, I chose to doubt and even judge.

Still like to see when some youth or some random guy hunting grandpa's or neighbor's back 40 lucks into the deer of a lifetime.

That is so true.

I hear Ya FB! It also happens on this forum but MUCH LESS often.
My group had an exceptional opener, I wouldn't call it the best but definitely top five, maybe top 3 even. When I commented on the SD page here I had someone insinuate that I was on a preserve hunt and our birds were "flare nares". Maybe he didn't intend to come off as a jerk, or maybe he just had a crap opener? Who knows. But it still irked me, the guys I hunt with have incredibly well trained dogs, shoot regularly, aren't afraid to burn up the boot leather to hunt a field properly, and we have access to some good property! With these ingredients we are often successful.

Stuff like this used to bother me even though not on FB and never have been. Now I could care less what any one else does or thinks they are hunting. It’s me and my buddy and our dogs against the birds. We know what we are hunting and the experience is the key. Others can do as they please and think how they want. Doesn’t change my experience at all.

A local guy has a pheasant hunt web page. Acquaintances of a local cousin booked a hunt with him after assurances it would be all wild birds. Experienced hunters, they immediately knew the birds were pen raised. The proprietor denied it. Then they found behind an out building a flat bed loaded with cages filled with birds. If you've never hunted pen raised, it'll become apparent right away.

I ran into a guy last week while hunting SD that said he has been paying a guy to hunt for 20 years that only releases wild birds on his property.
I wonder how he catches them? 😉
guy has a way with words

One thing is,they rarely run very far.You can get really close to them before they flush. They present really easy shots. They usually are small with short tails. They probably get hammered on by raptors and coyotes owls, fox.
