Help buying birds

I used to have a good contact for buying bobwhites, but the lady got tired of the problems and quit doing it.

Last season a simple internet search led me to a guy in Topeka that had Chukers, quail, and pheasants. I didn't keep his contact info and don't remember exactly how to get there, so I'm asking all of you for help.

Would you please tell me of someone around Manhattan, Junction City, or Topeka that has quail and chuckers? I know there's one guy on the site that can direct me to some quail, which is fine but I'd like to get some chuckers as well.

I'd rather go hunt some wild birds this w/e but the work schedule won't allow for it, so I owe it to the dogs to get em' in some birds this w/e.

Any info is much appreciated gents!

That's exactly who I was going to suggest. I've hunted chukar a few times out at his place. He provides self-guided hunts on his property, or just sells the birds outright.

There's also a guy out on 24 highway North of Manhattan that sells pheasant, and I believe chukar, but last time I drove by, I didn't see a damn thing in the pens.

Edit, it appears as if the second guy only sells pheasants...

You might give Superior Game Farms a try, he is just 20 minutes outside of Topeka and has the same set up as Muddy Creek I've been there a few times and he's a really friendly guy.

That McNeil game farm's bird pens are just East of Clay Center and his CSA is West of Clay Center. I have used them in the past for dog training and they were honest and friendly. I think he has all 3 birds, but I haven't ever gotten anything from him but pheasants.

In the past, he has allowed me buy only the number of birds (pheasants) I wanted to use that day, and plant them myself on his CSA to train my dog. The birds have been strong, wild flushers. I took my dog out there multiple times the first year I had her, and then once or twice a year before or after bird season just to keep her tuned up.

My experiences with them have always been good and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. You can't make a bird dog without birds.:D

I contacted one of them and was taken back by the price. Said the quail were "discounted" at $5/ea. Did I miss a rise in cost across the board over the summer?
He said chuckers were $10/ea. I picked them up for $6 last year.

I do appreciate everyone chiming in a great deal!! Keep em' coming b/c I'd like to find the quail for $4/ and the chuckers closer to $6....this leaves a little room in the budget for a rooster or 2.

Thanks again guys. I get the feeling I've made the best group of friends I'll ever have through this site. Never been much of a socialite, but the members of this site remind me that there are still some great people in this world.

chad,
who are you going to bring with you?
Just don't want thoses pen raised birds getting away from you.
You shoot those wild birds so damn well, these slow flyers will screw you up,you be so far ahead of them.
LOL,good luck ,if I had the time,I would do the exact same thing, one more for the dogs.

Found some at a very reasonable price! Thanks to all of you for your tips!

I'm taking Bret....and possibly one other guy. Not sure where we're releasing them yet, but not too far from home. Probably going to release them in a place w/ a couple of wild coveys. I'll let the dogs scatter the wild coveys and shoot the pen raised birds to fill my bag. I'd like to have you along if you could get away. I'm sure you're ole' boy wouldn't mind hunting some "easy" birds.

Cost of Birds

Be aware that the commodity price of corn is over $6.00 and soybeans are $14.00. any and all livestock prices are going up! Fast. If you think the birds are high, wait till you get to the grocery store for pork, beef, chicken, etc. Going to get scary, and the livestock producers sure aren't getting rich.
