New forum member here. Been hunting pheasants in SD since 1971, and ND since 2005. Two pointing labs in the stable, a 10-yr old yellow male, and a 2-yr old black female. Usual hunting style is by individual or small group (1-3) with dogs hunting into the wind. Both dogs trained to move vigorously through heavy cover for wild and/or late-season birds.

Welcome to UPH CRP, boy out here in Washington, that is about all we have to hunt. Most of our fields are cut grain. So CRP is it. Enjoy the forum, the group will discuss most anything hunting related........Bob

Not everyone likes to move through cover briskly, but that's how I learned. In the late seasons, the dumb birds are in the freezer so you need to hunt SMART. Let the dog find the birds and keep up. This is my favorite time to hunt. The birds are usually bunched up and very few hunters in the way. I hunted ND in late Dec. last year with temps in single digits. Tough going, but VERY rewarding.........

Pretty routine stuff. Begins with a Citori 20 or 16 GA with #6's from opening day through mid-November. When birds start getting up a little farther away, the 12 GA and #5's come out. This works good till mid/ late Dec., then its no more Mr. nice guy. Three inch #4's with Mod or IM chokes get the nod. However, If you stay with the dogs when they get birdy, you can stick with the I/C chokes and do just fine. I've never been that good on those 50-60 yard crossers that the blockers shoot at.

Welcome from another South Dakotan. Where are you located in SD? Sounds like you hunt a lot like me. Alone or small groups. I have 2 Brittanys. And I also have a 16 ga. Citori. Maybe we'll have to meet up and chase some rudies.

Far west part. I only hunt SD on that early 3-day resident season, then switch to ND till late Dec. With all of the recent hail in Lyman County, I'm not sure if the Presho/Murdo pheasant belt has any birds left or not. You must be really wet there in Aberdeen. I grew up over near Brookings and they always seem to be under water back there. Might be better for ducks than pheasants this year......................

welcome to the site:thumbsup:

Welcome to uph. Sounds like you've got one heck of a set up going right now with the 2 dogs and a few sweet hunting spots.

Those "sweet" spots are getting fewer every year. My advise to all is to go hunting as often as you can, because life is short, and you never know how long you will have your health or places to go!!!

The long/cold days of winter are not the time to think about the days you should have spent hunting.

CRP welcome and well put

That is the best advise, once a season passes you never get it back.

For instance, I received a call from a contact late October last year on a Wednesday about 4pm by 6pm on was packed and on the road for 6 hour drive to hunt pheasants, matter of fact the hunting was very good and worth leaving immediately.
