I personally think it could be worth a lot. My wife gave me this news first thing this morning and it just made my day. Not going into any further detail. Thanks for sharing it w/ the group.

Looks like Robin Jennison is the new guy.

We'll see what happens.

This quote from the Topeka paper is a bit concerning:

The governor-elect said he was counting on Jennison to help elevate the hunting and fishing industries in Kansas as part of a broader economic development strategy for the state.

"I want to market it aggressively," Brownback said in a statement. "I want to show America why Kansas has the best hunting in the world, some of the most unique recreational lakes and parks in the region, and unmatched tall grass prairie land that takes you back in time."

I honestly don't see how they could be "elevated" any further... I hope they don't start screwing with bag limits and the like, unless it's a more conservative amount.

That doesnt sound good. From that quote sounds like he wants this guy to turn us into Texas where its pay to play and pimp the deer herd out even more.

No THANKS!

We continue down the path we've been going I will make certain I move to the Southwest where Im closer to mulies and quail.

The thing that worries me is the "elevate the hunting & fishing industries" part of Brownback's comment. Doesn't sound like it is slanted towards the guys like us that enjoy the WIHA.

Here's a great first idea... throw a luxury tax on those $4,500 guided deer hunts people flip out the pocket book for..

I'm an out of stater, but own ground in Kansas, and half my family resides there. I don't see any reason to get excited about this guy. Another career politician, political appointee, no professional experience in outdoor management. I don't think Hayden was any prize either. Kansas City Star quotes the appointee as citing his "strong support and advocacy for landowners and their concerns." Kansas Farm Bureau, and landowners are why the Kansas pheasant season is two weeks shorter than it used to be now! Don't believe it? Go do some historical research circa 1980. As to destination hunting, I think Brownback made that clear, he's all in, with South Dakota as a model! Start saving up your lease money. As for Deer, come over here to Missouri, if I had my way, we would go to year round shooting like crows for about 5 years, and thin the peckerwood things out. I live north of Kansas City, but in sight of the city skyline, I have a deer yard with 15-40 deer in it on my back forty, all winter, and unlike Kansas, no chroinic wasting disease yet with over 44,000 tests in the last 10 years.

We're already a destination hunting state, if anything they'll probably appropriate more money for the public hunting program. Any "legislation" concerning leasing would likely be slapped down by the representatives.

I think the season is plenty long as-is. Was the season pushed back? If so, that's fine by me... it's already too hot most opening weekends, and the crops are still up in late September.

I hope that an increase in WIHA is in the offing, as you say. Yes, pheasant season used to open on the first weekend of November. Also, west of Highway 81, quail season was delayed for two weeks to give the quail respite from the huge influx of pheasant hunters on the opener. It was a great idea. I don't know why they quit that. It would eliminate a great deal of incidental quail mortality in the first couple of weeks. A lot of the opening day crowd never hunts again all year, but they can sure shoot a covey a quail down to nothing in a few minutes.

I am glad to see Hayden gone, but don't know what to expect from Jellison.

I think opening pheasant and quail the same day is poor management of the resource. I had no problem with the historic pheasant opener on the 2nd Saturday of November to include eastern quail zone. Where my place is at we could hunt either side the line and we enjoyed that, but for practical purposes and to keep it simple I would like to see quail statewide opening a week after pheasant.

All about the money

They started opening the quail season statewide for the sole purpose of the Opening Weekend Crowd/Non Residents. So to encourage more hunters to come out of the wood work the state started opening the seasons the same weekend.

I won't argue the fact that landowners affected the later opening of the season but about 4-5 years ago, once again they started pushing the pheasant opener back another weekend to correspond with the later western quail season.

Its sad its no longer about the wildlife but its about how much money the wildlife can bring. I don't disagree or think that its bad that hunting and fishing bring alot of money to the Kansas Economy but at what price does a dollar cost US?

I hated the split quail opener! We hunt in an area of the split and routinely cross the boundary several times a day/weekend and it was always a dilemma as to whether or not we should actually shoot any quail when we were on the right side of the boundary. Depending on the C.O. you run into your weekend could be good or bad.

With someone new in the charge, maybe I should go my lifetime license before the price goes up!

I'd love to see a state 'pheasant stamp' implemented, much like our state waterfowl stamp. $15, proceeds used to improve WIHA program and maybe subsidize some habitat improvements through NRCS or local extension agencies. If this is the type of fundraising they want to do, fine by me.

However, there are already too many OOS deer hunters, the fees associated with that needs to increase. Every OOS'er should be required to kill a doe before they can purchase a buck tag. OOS turkey tags should be triple the price they are. There should be a draw for a set number of OOS waterfowl licenses as well. We don't need more people to come here, we just need to take more money from the ones that do:thumbsup:

Sorry to offend any OOS'ers that enjoy KS hunting, but I don't see many bargains for me and my fellow Kansans when we venture outside of our borders. And IMO, people who come to KS to hunt and fish get way more than they pay for. I'd be willing to bet that most who come here wouldn't mind paying a little extra to enjoy the wonderful resources that we have.
