Has Kansas in any year has been better than South Dakota?

Depends on what you mean. I believe South Dakota has always produced more birds harvested then Kansas, but it's a lot cheaper to hunt Kansas.
I have seen the days where you could get your limit of birds in a couple of hours,if you could shoot straight, and I have seen the days ,like this year, where you could walk all day ,and never bust a cap.
I have never hunted S.Dakota, but I will take Kansas even in a down year.

SD, my pick every time......even in a down year.

I've hunted both for years. South Dakota always has more birds but that hasn't always added up to more birds in the bag or more enjoyment (a 500 rooster flush is exciting, but often it leaves the field empty.) Until this year the areas I've hunted in Kansas produced more than enough birds and enjoyment for me and saved hours of driving and expense (a year license in Kansas is less than a 10 day license in SD).

I did better on pheasants in South Dakota, also Nebraska, for me it was the frame of mind. In South Dakota, and most of Nebraska, in the good areas we were hunting pheasants, only. In Kansas, we quail hunted, adjusted my pattern for quail, shot a lot of pheasants, on the way. We had quail, didn't bother me a bit. In three of four days down the road everybody might get their limits on pheasants. I'm sure they were there all the time, just didn't adjust to hunt them. For just pheasants, I would say South Dakota, but if quail are in the equation, Kansas, I'll take the pheasants I get, never look back.

I have hunted both for many years. There have been times in Kansas the hunting has been great. That being said I have seen things in SD that I have never seen in Kansas. I hunted in Kansas when I was a kid around the Phillipsburg, Norton area. We always had a group of 15-18 hunters and easily shot limits by 3 or so every opening weekend. I sold the tail feathers to the neighbor lady, who did floral arrangements, for a buck apiece. Every year it was worth a hunskie or so. I like to see birds when I hunt. I guess Some of us never fully mature as hunters. I am OK with that. I like seeing my boys get on birds like I did when I was young. I like seeing my dog mature as a hunter with a good deal of bird contact. Myself, I could care less if I shoot a limit or not. Call me crazy but, I do like to shoot at one occasionally. In answer to your question, a good year in Kansas is a down year in SD.

SD vidio

here is a vidio I shot off the road of private land, this is not a hunting lodge planted type hunt just paid hunters on private land in a down year for South Dakota, I don't know the hunters but know the land owner and he just leases his land for hunting. I have never hunted Kansas but hear tell it can be great in good years.I had a chanch to hunt over 3 thousand acres of private in Kansas in the mid 80's around Liberal while up there on other business and saw a ton of birds a day before thier season opened but didn't have a dog at that time and kick myself for not taking them up on it and going. This vidio was shot this year in mid nov.

I like this video, because it shows what can happen on a truly wild pheasant hunt. Truly wild and wary pheasants are not always easy to hit.

Those videos that shows, over and over, the dog and the hunter walking right up to the pheasant and perfect flush on camera. I sometimes suspect that those are planted birds.

The best pheasant hunt I every had was when I walked into a playa lake, 20 years ago, and flushed around 50 pheasants in one flush and unloaded my pump and missed every one.

South Dakota is Amazing! Kansas can be!!!! Hunted South Dakota 4 times and it was not much work to get 3 bird limit! Kansas you can be done early or may take you all day or you may not even limit out! As far as a place to go and gain access!!! Kansas!!!! One time had a better then South Dakota moment!!!! walked a draw full of tumbleweeds that ended into uncut wheat with weeds!!! Kicked up at least 1500 birds that day!!!! Crazy day!!! Almost gave up after 3/4 of a mile and nothing, then it was sick with birds!!!! Memories!!!!! LOL!!
