Hardest pheasant shot for you?

For me it is just dropping below the bird. I tend to shoot at it, and well, behind. If I remember I drop below and they drop. Getting better, but still my most challenging.

Yes you are correct. Drop the barrel, to lead the bird. That's what you do on that shot. It's a lot easer said than done.

quartering left-to-right.

My brain always processes that the bird is crossing more than it really is. I often miss this one out front (right), and I will sometimes empty my gun to the right of the bird even though it has straightened out and has become mostly a straightaway shot.

That miss always makes me feel dumb because my lead feels right at the moment I am shooting, but immediately afterward I know exactly how and why I missed. INFURIATING!!!

It's important to leave a few for seed, you know.:D

missed shot

wound up today, must be the storm coming, lots of snow forecast. a recent article says this. first of all, look where you want your shot to go, forget every thing else, second of all, if you tend to be a two shot shooter it is cause you don't get your head down where it belongs on the stock, the first shot you are not settled in, dreaming about the kill or whatever, the miss wakes you up, panic maybe, but you put your head to the stock and dead bird. shot guns should not have a sight on them so quit looking at them, it makes no difference whether you have one barrel, two or three, you shouldn't see it anyway, look where you want the shot to go, there ya have it, more dead birds

cheers

Agreed, keep your focus on the slow quail and your brain will do the rest.

Confucious says, " the slow bird is a bird in the pot". Hopefully he falls dead in an open area! Be alert!

The springers will find him even if he drops in the briar.

All of them but not all the time. Often enough however to cover your face with your hand and ask yourself if golf might not be your real calling.

LOL Maybe , but not mine. Golf and me are a shoot the ball, not drive or iron the ball. I shoot far better than I play goof. :D

My worst shooting is at croossers on heavy wind days. I think it's because they aren't going the speed they look to be going. I started throwing in tight chokes and taking them further out when their angle isn't changing so rapidly on really windy days. I still shoot worse than usual, but not as bad as before.

a common problem when shooting roosters in the wind is the tail is an eye catcher and people tend to read off what the tail is doing, in many instances the tail seems to be going a different direction than the bird, hence the miss, pattern can also be disturbed but in most cases that is an excuse as in say maybe 25 mph wind the drift is only 8 to 10 inches but your pattern likely exceeds 30 ". so you would have to think of something else. besides, if the pheasants didn't make an idiot of you once in a while, what's the fun. use a 28 ga. you can swing it faster cause you won't be all tired out carrying a cannon.

cheers

That's easy. The one that jumps up right under my feet then goes into a spiraling climb and ends up back behind me and starts diving down wind while I'm trying to get my feet uncrossed.

The one I just missed! That may change on angle and direction on a regular basis some days. Other days I might not have any.

The ones that get up when I am crossing the fence, creek, or any other obstacle that keeps, me from having my feet on level ground, or the gun in, my hands loaded and to fire. :D:thumbsup::10sign:

The ones where the bird is in the air. :p

One that got away

I had just finished a long push through a field with some good cover, crossed the road and was waiting for my partner to pick me up. I stood around for about ten minutes waiting. I decided to sit against a fence post. I set down my shotgun and sat down. No less than ten feet behind me a rooster came cackling out of a small clump of grass. I taught that bird the true meaning of fowl language (excuse the pun). Never let your guard down, I guess.
