Can't catch one flippin' break!!!!! Hard freeze 2 nights in a row. Any eggs not being set on are done. Who knows about the wheat? Crap!!!!

Not to mention my garden, but:mad:

Isn't it too early for any eggs this time of year?

Probably a few out there, but very few.. I always figure a 37 day cycle. Here are some very crude numbers as I understand it. Maybe Prairie Drifter could confirm or give a better answer.

Pheasants
Average first nest 14 eggs
Hen lays an egg a day
Incubation 23 days
Peak hatch date in Kansas June 7.
Earliest I've personally seen chicks in Kansas May 25th
May 25th - 37 days = April 18th

Quail
Roughly the same cycle with the peak hatch being about a week later. I have no quail calling around my house yet.

The hatch curve is "normally distributed" which means that statistically, there are an equal number of birds hatched before and after the peak.

Based on this I've always wished for a very large amount of rain until April 15th and then about 1/2" weekly coming in 1/4" increments with temps about 2 degrees above normal. Then having 1" per week beginning in July.

I realize that this is all very crude and unscientific, it may be incorrect. It's just the way I've always understood it.

Point!

I think turkey eggs and Woodcock eggs would could have been hit.

Northern WI will get up to 10in of snow in the next 24 hours. Grouse and woodcock beware.. Over 2 feet of ice on the lakes and snow like its February. Just crazy. Guess I shouldnt complain about our 30 degree mornings..

I think it's a little early for turkeys in Missouri. The Canada geese will be on the nest, and of course the raptors!

Just in the last few days have we seen lonely hens away from the flock mid-mornings, sure sign that the are starting to lay eggs.

birds

a few days ago in n. w. kansas, began seeing hens wandering, jake's in small groups, no nice toms, far fewer birds this year but surely enough to go around, some days the gobbling was hot and then some days they forgot to do it. the jake i shot with the bow was 14.5 lbs, so he hadn't been starving. seeing far more pheasants plus their crowing this year than last, the area needs a great rain for a couple of days, water shortage is a major problem in the area, the river is just about dry and no ponds or mud holes in my area. all this is a problem for the turkey as i think they drink quite a lot during the day.

cheers
