Ground-pounding opinions

With a benelli safety is in back of trigger gaurd. As I mount and putting my finger on the trigger I hit safety with the middle of my finger. I have fronchi and benelli guns, I treach this method so you’re not poking at it with the tip of your finger. I encourage safety on as long as possible. I know it would take some getting use to but manufactures that have the safety on the front of trigger gaurd would be a hard sell for me. Thumb safety’s are fine. Barrels in safe direction, just be safe

Wearing orange and yelling will spook birds for sure. You have to be quiet, that's very important.

Can't do anything about the orange. Its required in many states.

Yelling hen or rooster is completely unnecessary. If it's a rooster, shoot it. If it's a hen, you don't. If you can't tell, you don't shoot. Its not complicated.

If you are shooting hens, you should not be hunting pheasants. Shooting a hen is called poaching.

I'll let the coyotes have them before I take the chance again. I was lucky. Hunting down a deep creek with zero cover, bean stubble. Looking for singles from a covey. Dog came from behind me and went down the 6' bluff bank. A quail got up at the exact moment, probably 15 yards ahead. Dropped it at probably 30 yards ahead and 20 yards from the steep bank. It jumped up and took off running for the creek. I broke my own rule. I never dreamed that dog could cover that much ground and climb that bank that quick, but he launched over bank as I pulled the trigger. He yelped, then picked up the bird and brought it to me. I've never felt so bad in my life. He just had a couple shot in him but learned a valuable lesson. Never again. If the dog can't find it the coyotes can have it!!

A covey of what, quail?

Ground pounding crippled birds is a must, assuming it's a safe shot. Otherwise it's coyote food.
I most of my hunting habitat, you will not see a wounded rooster if it isn't in the dogs mouth or within a yard or 2 of the dog. With the recent snow, it had much of the switch grass leaning over with a bit of snow on it. Hunting food plots adjacent to the switchgrass is where my 3 birds came from Sunday. The 2nd one fell into and was on top of grass, his head popped up and I gave him a second helping of 5s, as the dog was still ahead of me in the sorghum. That stuff is even harder to get thru when it is laid over.
Coyotes need to eat too.
