Great Retrieve

My 2 year old Brittany is turning into quite a retriever. Yesterday towards the end of our hunt I was walking in some snow covered CRP next to a road. I was a ways out in the CRP when a rooster jumps up next to the ditch. I shoot and the rooster goes down in the ditch (mowed short) and takes off running. Bree sees the rooster and takes off after it but the rooster is running in short grass and Bree is fighting the snow and CRP. As she's falling further behind she finally gets out of the CRP and into the ditch, meanwhile the rooster has crested a small hill and I lose sight of it. Bree, in hot pursuit also disappears over the hill. I thought I'd just wait and see if she returned with the bird. After a few minutes here she comes over the hill out in the CRP with Mr. Rooster in her mouth still very much alive. Not sure how far she had to chase it but I was a proud papa.

Last week I jumped two roosters in heavy cover with 7 inches of snow on top. Dropped them bother but couldn't find either one. I got Bree in the area and thought she had one of them a couple of times as she was borrowed under the snow but came out with nothing. Finally after 10-15 minutes of searching she found one buried in and within 30 seconds had the second one. Both were only winged and very much alive. Obviously moving around under the snow cover. Just hard to beat good dog work.

That's awesome! Looking birds sucks. I've lost 6 this year, and felt bad about all of them.On one, I only had 2 shells in, and got a good hit on one, but couldn't finish him, and he somehow managed to fly into this inpenitrable buck brush. My lab gi t in there, but I think he spurred her, or he was too high.Anyway, I lost him.I few others were just bad wing hits, and they hit the ground running. Those can be hard for any dog.

Sounds like you need a new gun and a new dog.

There are some birds, that even the best digs can t get.I think I may need to change choked in my 1187.I have a 12, and a 20.I shoot the 12 a lot better than the 20, but I've had it for 19 years. The 20, only 2 years.I like the weight of the 20, but I get more winged birds, and I don't shoot past 40 yards, generally.

What a feeling eh?! Congrats on the great dog work! I had a similar experience to the double you described above and Pearl rooted them out. I ran into a colleague later that day and she asked me what I was grinning about! LOL I realized that I was still just so darned pleased with my morning outing!
At only 2 years old that’s some pretty hard core retrieving your Britt is pulling of though!
Cheers
Dave

Great retrieves.

Way to go Bree !!

Sounds like she turning out to be quite the,gun dog !!!

Every Brittany I have owned have proved to be very serviceable dogs , it’s lots of fun when the light bulb goes on and they become proffecient/ Brag dogs !!!
