Gov't bussiness?

Never looked at crp this way not for sure why. But people that put in crp get paid by the gov't then collect fees for people to hunt it seems like welfare to me:) Wheres the tea party:D Guess I don't care just don't seem right. or should be taxed to the Max. I would never take money for someone to hunt my crp. Whats your guys opinion?

Has never been and never will be any fee to hunt my crp

Can't argue with any one single land owner about pay to hunt ---but collectively it sucks

I keep track of who hunts. I have CRP, and I don't charge. Seems weird to me, but I divorce the idea of income from bird hunting, I guess I feel like it's more important to give it away, to certain people, most of whom can't afford to pay. On the other hand I have participated in leased ground, or access fees, when I went out of state, so I don't have complaint for those who do. I do know guys who's phone rings of the wall, for deer season, pheasant season, etc. Some lease because they are hopeful that it will decrease the calls, with a "leased sign" on a post, and help with trespassers as well. Some times the fee is related to liability insurance fees, to rectify 'hunting accidents". that may occur! If you have a lot of time and energy involved, a lot of these cost real money, to recover some revenue to offset it doesn't bother me, what ever we gain is much better to everyone, fee hunter, or free agent, who hunts in it or around it!

I guess I look at it like this: the government not being involved led us into the dirty 30's. The government "had" to get involved then on a nationwide stage to keep us from even worse ends. Even then the shift in population from central US to the coasts has never been reversed. The government programs that followed benefitted everyone that eats. The unfortunate thing is that we keep having to relearn the same lessons about farming erodible and marginal land. Programs like CRP need to be longer reaching and more permanent. We have not only a duty to feed ourselves, but we also have a duty to maintain our hunting heritage. The farmers and ranchers own the land and if they wish to charge for access to it, I can't blame them. However, like everything else, that heritage needs to be cultivated or it too will pass into history and that will result in a loss of income not only for the land owners, but for the local motels, grocery, filling station..........

Hi Coot,
I am sorry to butt heads with you twice in one day. I have had several CRP contracts over the years. The last ones I have comercially hunted on for several years. If I take the CRP payment and add in the hunting revenue and the presumption that two out of ten years I will probably cut half of it for hay in a drought year, then I can justify putting it into CRP. If I can generate the same amount of income with the whole CRP package including hunting and emergency hay, then the land is covered and all wildlife benefits. The alternative is corn, beans and wheat. Which would you rather that I do?

How many small bussinesses get half there inventoy or more paid for by the gov't? ZERO. And thats what the gov't pays for crp planting. Guess hunting just ain't what it use to be:( Seems funny the gov't pays to save habitat and animals then allows people to make money by killing all the animals thats raised on it:confused:.

HI haymaker:) Just don't threaten to beat me with a club and we'll be OK:D Guess whats got me haired up is a hunting show I watched on deer hunting. Them ding dongs were proud they feed deer so their antlers got huge. They had feeders and cut trails. just so they could Take peoples money for the BIG one:confused: All courtesy of the gov't program:) And they were so dumb they said that:confused:

I agree with what you are saying Troy, but it really makes people look stupid. Maybe we can go on a good run and surprise ourselves someday!

Gov't set-asides are not about hunting, nor should they be.
That is simply a plus where it exists.
If a farmer wishes to increase his return on the set-asides, fine...if not, fine as well.
The Public receives benefits from the set-asides either way and well independent of hunting access.
Hunters can be very self-focused on some issues, too self-focused.
Head on down the road if some aspect or requirement rankles.

Big L, Leasing for Deer and Turkey has more likelihood of stunting hunter recruitment across the country than the occasional farmer charging cash to hunt his program ground...they are both very different deals in many areas.

For what it's worth, the recipient of CRP payments and fees charged hunters has to pay income taxes on both, and, in most cases, self-employment taxes on them as well.

Coot I am not all that threatening. I assure you that the birds are WILD, and just given an opportunity to do what pheasants do. There are quite a few hunters that are glad that I do what I do, and in this era of decreasing hunting opportunities it seems like the right thing to do. Good hunting to you.
