We should have gteat weather thu about the 11th of June at least for birds that mey be hatching. Slightly above normal, no heavy rain and no cold temos. There is water in most areas and good dew in the morning.

That's great news. I think most areas in the Mid-west will see a bump in bird #'s this spring. Not all, but many.

Not far from my home, a gentleman saw a hen with 11 chicks. Great brood! News I like to hear;)

Great posts like this is why you are a UPF Guru, Uncle Buck. :D

We are going to lose some nests to mowing, as usual. They will re-nest and the sooner the better. They will re-nest in safer spots usually--fenceline ditch slough area etc.

I was checking for dusting pots yesterday. Saw some good news for my area, though we could use some rain. Watering areas are drying up plus the crops are starting to look stressed.

Where water still remains there was plenty of pheasant tracks in the mud. Many tracks left behind from pheasant chicks:thumbsup:

Roosters are still cackling away within their established areas/territories.

Seeing a nice bump in cotton tail rabbits this year compared to years past.

There's a group of Hungarian Partridge that's moved into the particular area I was observing. Haven't seen Hun's around here since the 90's.

A couple of turkeys in the area too.

Thanks be to the farmer!!!!! He left the hedgerows alone!!! Beautiful wide hedgerows. I was concerned this spring due to tile/drainage/Roundup (of hedgerows) work being done around this area. Anyway, the hedgerows are still there and looking very diverse this year! Prime pheasant chick, and roosting habitat. A lot of shrubs coming in to.

Thus far, all good news my friends:cheers:

Phez4, Lots of good things you have going there.
Diverse:thumbsup: habitat left to the birds, COOL!

Yeah! I was very surprised. Honestly when I walked back there I was prepared for the worst. I expected all the hedgerows be put into crops.

The reed cannery grass was killed out by a heavy dose of Roundup this spring. I can't believe the great stuff that's coming up as a result. Lot's of forbs in the mix too now. It's just a wonderful mess of everything pheasants love.

That will make some great cover for growing pheasant broods.

Things seem to still be looking up for the pheasant hatch in SD. Have been checking some of the precipitation levels and it seems June has been pretty dry.

Saw another breeding pair of pheasants crossing the road earlier this evening. Stopped by my cousins for dinner and heard a hand full of roosters cackling behind his house too:thumbsup:

The state's leaving ditches alone (until July) along state highways/roads. They're looking very good. Habitat most everywhere is looking the best I've seen in a long time.:)

Areas that have been under water the past few years (some so wet they've been un-huntable for pheasants) are in perfect shape this year.

Fist time in a long time I'm seeing a lot of young rabbits along roadsides too.

All and all, we are on a track for some better bird numbers here in N. Illinois.
