Good to See

I shot some clay targets tonight with a teenager I take hunting. He had a friend over who also went with us. Both boys shot well and we had a good time. We talked about hunting and it was good to see how much both enjoy hunting and shooting.

I teach middle school level students and I love to talk hunting with several of these young hunters. The are very passionate and talk with much respect for the sport.

Thanks for taking them along. It's fun to help get kids started.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger FC. WAY! too many kids fall victim to those games.

we bout our kids a gaming system foir those times that they were just hanging out had it a whole year now and they have used it 5 times waste of money around this house:thumbsup:

I remember walking in a friends house when I was about 8 or 9 years old, leaning in the corner was a SxS shotgun against a duck brown hunting coat, I will never forget that image, I remember seeing the old guys in the neighborhood getting home Saturday afternoon and unloading the beagles, splitting up rabbits by the dozen, or skinning gray squirrels, with Browning A5 or L.C Smith doubles leaning against the garage, now no darn Nintendo game would have caught a second glance from me after those scenes! I just had to get to hunting somehow!

yes, I have tried to take some young people shooting and hunting. I found it a watse of time around here. All I got was excuses for why they couldn't do it or go hunting........Bob

right- one hour- all you hear is- "what's the fun in this"

sorry- unless I see some desire and drive- I'll let them set in their rooms behind a TV or computer- got to laugh at the parents-

course the parents are the root of it all

I finally got a buddy of mine hooked 2 years ago, and now this is all we do. (Besides work, although we talk about how good of show they could put on with our forgetfulness and tendencies to procrastinate leading to a big rush to finish everything.) But I have noticed more younger people getting out and hunting ducks and deer. Biggest problem in southern Iowa is you have to work for 1 pheasant or do little to nothing for a limit on ducks. Most will choose the limit at this age thinking it is cooler. My buddy is still in this stage. Me, I like to take new people out and watch them learn and grow. I still enjoy seeing a bunch of birds and getting a limit, but it is more fun to work a flock of ducks by calling them in and trying to understand what they are thinking or figure out where a rooster is trying to escape out of and the best way to make him get up.

My Dad's dad farmed and my Dad grew up farming and hunting and didn't want anything to do with it. He moved to the city

I didn't hunt till I was 24 years old. If I wasn't in the business of the internet with outfitters, guides and the internet, I wouldn't hunt to this day. So it's fun to see the youth out hunting.

I heard a stat on the radio that waterfowl sales in MN are down 50% as compared with the 80's.

Webguy, I think part of that has to do with the economy on some older hunters and laziness on younger hunters. I had a close friend who was a janitor at my high school and he used to wake me up at 6 or 630 am on his way to the school to let me know I could go in and get my workouts done. I had to be to work or school around 8ish and never got done with stuff until 6 pm at the earliest. He tells me kids complain to him about not being able to get workouts done in the afternoon and he tells them when he gets there and he says none of them are willing to get up and get things done. I also see that in younger kids my dad hires. They don't like being there at 8 am and put everything off until we have to really get after them. One kid doesn't have a problem because his dad raised him working on a hog farm. I do think many kids are getting spoiled and work ethic is really failing.

I like seeing posts like this one. What you did this day I consider very important. Just yesterday, I took 4 ladies out and introduced them to the .22's, shotguns, handguns, and then let them pump out about 200 rounds from the AK. Every one of them turned around with the biggest smiles on their faces after shooting the AK. They all seemed to focus on the genital section of my male attacker target:eek: Not sure what that was about but they sure enjoyed themselves.

Everyone was supposed to shoot 10 rounds then pass the gun off. My 5-yo took his turn on the AK and we finally got him to stop somewhere between 20-25 rounds. Man he loves that gun:)

I never really thought that this was an issue, we always loved to hit the fields and get out there with our family and friends. But I am now going to make a phone call to my nephew (we have no kids) to see where he stands on the whole hunting thing!

I really think that it is just a phase! Maybe as they get older they will change~

A lot of it is the "lost generation" that never had any exposure. My neighbor and his son always watch me working with my GSP -one day I just flat out asked if they'd ever bird hunted. Neither had so I invited them along. Hats off to the dad who said he had no interest but let me take his 15 year old this past saturday. We shot a round of sporting clays and then he shot his first quail (after many, many misses and some fun ribbing from me). He ended up getting a dozen birds and was whooped by the end of th morning. I told him it's a sad statement when an old silver hair like me can out walk a fifteen yr. old wrestler in his prime. Needless to say, he's hooked and is already asking when he can go again. His dad called me last night and wanted to thank me since it seems his son has told him of the guns and clothes "he needs"
