Good 'ole Weld County

I decided to return to some of my old haunts in Weld county yesterday and see if I could find a rooster in some of the "old spots."

It turned out to be my favorite day of the season! :)
The weather was perfect and I managed to find a surprisingly large number of birds which was an added bonus. These were no ordinary birds however! One of the landowners that I spoke with said that I was the only hunter he had all season and I figured it would be easy pickings. Boy was I wrong! These birds were something else. They just wouldn't fly. Of course it didn't help that they were in some of the thickest cover I've hunted all season but I figured with snow and my 8 month (just now beginning to not chase) GWP we'd have no problem. I tracked some of them in circles and had to laugh and just how wily they were. Great times for sure.

Something about returning to areas that you haven't hunted in a while and finding birds again made me pretty happy. I did manage to put one in the bag which was no small feat!

Sweet pic! I see pheasants around Weld county every now and then, but haven't hunted them. I'm glad to hear someone's getting after them.
 
Great Pic! Glad to hear you got after them wooster's! I went to undergrad in Greeley and always wanted to chase birds around there. Glad to hear you had a great hunt at a special family honey hole!
 
Had yesterday off and decided to do another solo nostalgic pilgrimage to the old spots in Weld County. LOTS of drill rigs out there, a few good spots are now gone and others had stakes everywhere so I assume they're going to follow in suit...c'est la vie.

I did see some good numbers and I enjoyed knocking on doors, especially when met with quizzical looks! I suspect no one had ever inquired with some of these folks! :) Earlier in the morning I had a great chance at a rooster but he must have known because he flushed directly towards the only home within range, Merle gave me that look...

Anyhow, I managed to locate an old windrow that I've hunted in the past and within 10 minutes I had two roosters in the bag!!! The birds cooperated and Merle had solid points on both which made it even better (I doubt they had been hunted this year). On the walk back to the truck I cut a fresh track and followed him out into some old stubble. I was blessed with another great point/flush and connected again for my limit! All birds were very mature with incredible tail feathers and spurs. Needless to say, it was a great day for me and Merle.

Some owners do...if you play your cards right.
It probably helps being alone and playing the innocent puppy card. I'll usually start the conversation with something about just wanting to get the dog out for a run with the hopes of seeing a bird. I'm sure some just write me off as another dumb-ass hunter with no chance of shooting a bird :D
 
Sure wish you would quit shooting all the trophy birds!!!! LOL!!! Use to see a bunch North of Galeton, have not been there recently!!! Again around Kersey!!! Once in a great moon some show up at the Duck blind, which I have only been to one time this year, without gun, to take my cousin!!! Those are some great pic's and I am glad you shared!!!!! Hope you have a good rest of the season!!!:cheers:

Ha ha!!! These were definitely trophs! Kersey it is :) I'll be up at Centennial SWA on Saturday to try my hand at some quackers, I just love that area for some reason. I hope you have a great rest of your season too.
