Good Ju-Ju!!!

Off the smart ass quotes. There is not going to be much corn standing by the time season opens. I have never seen a harvest start this early. The stalks are still green and the grain is running 14-16 moisture. Just Crazy for this area. We usually always have to have a freeze to make the corn finish drying. The birds are phenomenol better than a year ago for sure. SO please dont complain there isnt birds in Colorado cuz they are here.

Engpointerman - I'm interested to know: what's the reason behind the early harvest? Heat/dry weather in September the cause for the grain being so dry at this time of year?

Anyways, should be good for you guys out there, right? High prices this year on corn and wheat, so getting them in sooner means better cash flow for you, yes?

Good to see you back on here EPM, smarty-@ss quotes & all! Are you sure you & "grouchyolddude" ain't all mixed up or the same person... :p

Just kidding, gonna be a really good year with plenty birds to go round for everyone! Should help considerably lighten up all the typical bitchin & moaning, but some folks can always manage to find a reason (& I wasn't referring to you)...  ;)

Glad to hear the corn's already comin out - sad I'm gonna miss the opener!

My best guess on the early harvest would be the same as yours. We have not had any kind of great moisture since early August. Commodity prices are ok. Corn is looking better by the day here as of late. Most people spend alot of time marketing ahead of time. That depicts more of how they do than the markets the day of harvest. I just do custom hay work. The hay markets are ok but not grand.

Hen hen there will always be bitching no matter what. I will see a post on here the monday after season opens that says there is no birds. No cover etc. I think thats what upsets me the most on this site. LOL but I know better. SO good luck.

Theres no birds in colorado so just keep goin east. EPM see ya opening weekend at the banquet.
I kinda like it when the corns still standin on the opener as I stop and visit with the farmers in the field and always come up with another place to hunt.

EPM - you got it right that there's always gonna be somebody complaining... my guess is that the complaining comes from folks that don't take the time to scout, etc... I spent a number of seasons walking a lot of miles on public land with a buddy or two, never had much luck.

Last few years, a few things have changed:
1) Got a good dog
2) Got some experience under my belt
3) Developed some relationships, got a little access to private land
4) Grew the smarts to do some scouting before I hunt

Combine all these things and - Lo and behold - there's roosters out there!

I've got mixed feelings about the corn report (the report itself is great!) but last year was interesting; it seemed like hardly any birds got popped by the hords on opening weekend because of all the standing corn. I wonder if it helps contribute to better numbers down the road...

I'm with ya, Win21... Would rather have the corn stay up until it's too cold for anyone but the serious hunters among us. Happy to have the crowds dwindle and the temp drop before it all comes down, makes for better hunts late season.

Its definately better to have the corn come out later. Me living where I do the numbers drop drastically if opening weekend there isnt much success. This year I have a feeling they will come for a few more weekends at least through Thanksgiving. It seems to always really drop off after that. Than u can hunt about anywhere without their being hunting pressure

I agree with you guys completely! I'm worried that the corn will be out and the birds will get slaughtered opening weekend. I sure hope not. It is good for the farmers though. They should have everything wrapped up early this year and have time to relax around Thanksgiving and enjoy themselves.

Just an update I guess. Corn is coming out fast. Beets are almost already out. The landscape is changing quick. I am baling cornstalks. Seems like most of everyones work will be done in two to three weeks without a major weather impact. Very strange everyone will be done so early.

Thats one of the great things about hunting birds. Each year is different, the population, their location, the weather, and of course the habitat. You think you have it down and bam it changes. We then change our approach and if we succeed it is a sweet thing. If not then we have something to blame.
