GMO Labeling War - See the How the Big $$$ Works

Ask the question: Why would Monsanto fork out $44 Million (in CA alone) so GMO foods are not label as such?

Probably because more monsanto products are used by farmers in California than the rest of the US combined.

I recall reading in I think it was the NY times a while ago about the large amounts of glyphosate (the ingredient in roundup) that is in most people system. Mainly due to most farmers using roundup ready seed. There is supposed to be studies going on right now about its realtionship to the increase in the number of people with cancer and allergies.
I know we would have alot more upland habitat if there where no more roundup ready seed. It was too dry to spray this past year so many farmers around here didnt do much of it and after harvest there was weedy cover all over the place. But they mowed or tilled it almost as soon as they harvested the crop.

Yes WHY?
I know one thing for sure--several years ago I planted some corn that was given to me by the state(South Dakota) and Monsanto, had to sign all kinds of paperwork that I would would leave it in the field for conservation OR ELSE. Don't think I'll ever do that again--Monsanto and ilk are SCARY BIG and I want nothing to do with them. Think I'll grow more weeds for wildlife from now on.:D

They had a Monsanto booth at the fair one town north of me (small ag community with lots of dairies). I guess I looked like a farmer because a man approached me asking if I use any of their products and tried to give me some pamphlets. I told him I hated glyphosphates and what they've done to the valley and then I asked him what "monsanto suicides" were. He backed away fast and the rest of the night I was looking over my shoulder for a black van and guys in trench coats to take me away.

EPA has not done research on Glyphosate since the 1970's. It has been exempted by political pressure. Canada has banned it in some uses, other countries are too. The product is 80% of Monsato's income! They make a lot! We'd be better off if they didn't.

DU and Bayer have an interesting joint venture regarding winter wheat support and technical assistance to growers.

http://www.wintercereals.us/

I spoke with a DU agronomist today and they are waiting for GMO wheat to help the cause.

I like the model they have for creating better crops that support duck nesting but they are up against the same giants everyone else is.

Maybe we can start a war between obamacare and big ag?

There is an easy solution to the problem. Everyone who does not like gmo crops should just start buying organic food and the market will force producers to plant non-gmo crops. Or maybe we all like our 99 cent double cheese burger to much.

Thats a good idea moe!

How are consumers going to react to Round Up Ready sweet corn?
It's already been planted and canned/frozen for human use.
It will dominate the industry soon.
I'm going to plant a bunch of it this Spring.

I guess I'm luck in that I can buy local, organic produce off the roadside stands, farmers markets or get a box of goodies delivered once a week to my door step cheaper than I could buy that supermarket crap. No gmo sweet corn for me thank you.

I'm only curious. When produce is delivered to Your door or what ever.
How do You Know?
I was just at the farmers market in LA, bought some real nice looking strawberries and raspberries. Guess what:eek: labels said "product of Mexico"

VERY tasty by the way.

I personally know the farmer. He invites anyone who is interested to visit his 40 acre farm. All organic, and he grows every vegetable you could imagine. I only buy from local stands where the fruit stand is on site. A nice viatnamese couple grows about 10 acres of strawberries right down the road from my house, they sell everything they pick everyday. Its a benefit of living in a smallish central valley community.

Basically any fuit, vegetable or nut crop you can think of (and i do mean any) is grown somewhere in my county and is seasonally available straight from the producer. If its not in season in my county we try not to eat it because its coming from another country.

The guy who has the organic farm also uses weeder geese in some of his crops and believe me when I say they are the most delicious christmas bird you could ever imagine. I also have access to locally produced lamb, goat, pork and organic grass fed beef.
