Game warden checks?

I think it's a simple by-product of more hunters doing it. Deer hunters outnumber everything else combined here. So naturally, the result is going too be more problems.

I am not about to approach someone who I think is poaching or trespassing. I'll call an LEO. That's their job, not mine.
I actually did drive up on these guys one time, and I'm with them know that I was calling the cops. Then I drove off. I don't know exactly what happened, but they were cited.

I get checked about once every four or five years. It's typically a very nice conversation. They check license and shells. A number of years ago, I took my wife out for resident opener, grabbed the vest with 20 gauge shells for her and when we finished, gamey shows up and it's discovered my wife had lead shells in her vest on a WPA. The game warden was nice and understanding, I explained it was my fault and he said that even so, it's every hunter's responsibility to make sure they are in accordance with the regulations. My wife was not particularly impressed with me that day.
I would have said honey you need to check your vest for lead.

I can't believe they wrote you guys a ticket for that, that's crazy.

The problem is no poachers go jail. The worst serial poachers just get a big fine like $20,000 and lose their license in that state for life. Jail time you need to be killing people not animals. Montana has around 100 game wardens to cover 147,000 square miles. Definitely need a lot more. It is a very tough job, and not a lot of pay.
Montana has mountains, South Dakota and North Dakota don't really have any mountains. There are no mountains in the Midwest.

Huh?? What does have to do with what I posted?? I have lived in Montana for 65 years, I know the geography. But next year I want to check out the geography ND or SD for the first time. 😀

Okay here's the geography. You can usually see for 20 miles. It's it's flat compared to Montana.

Midwest actually has trees too. Prairie does not.
This is a continuing problem. That is to say woody encroachment on grasslands. Over time the edge of the prairie and where it meets woodland parks eventually turning into continuous hardwoods has shifted at different degrees of longitude often based on long-term precipitation trends. The biggest change that tilts things in favor of trees over grass and forbes is human fire supression.

Fishing with my sons on Lake of the Woods last weekend, had only been fishing for 1.5 and we were checked by the warden.I asked if they had ever been checked by the wardens. My son that lives in North Dakota told us about his experience with a North Dakota Game check point last year.
My son, coworker and coworkers son were coming back from duck hunting and they had to stop for the check point. The North Dakota warden checked the ducks. He told them they could leave, but one of the federal warden's told them to stop. The federal warden looked at the ducks and told them they over the limit on lesser scaup. He question them on who shot the mallards and the scaup. My son's co worker finally said he would take the ticket for the scaup. The federal warden wrote a ticket, confiscated the ducks and said they will check to make sure the ducks were lesser scaup. The federal warden called my son's coworker that evening and told him to tear up the ticket because the ducks were ring neck ducks not lesser scaup.

I've never been checked or even seen a game warden here in Iowa in the previous 5+ years but I'd honestly welcome it as I imagine they'd be interesting to shoot the shit with. When I used to live in Utah, it felt like I got checked or ran into a stop at least once a season and, probably had as much to do with the fact that we were never in violation of anything, they were always pretty pleasant to deal with and, if they had time, they'd usually shoot the breeze for a bit.

How is wild pheasant hunting in Utah? I read a summary but it was written 75 years ago. It had good pockets then.
