Game Time!

Since we talked about game week, I figure we can talk about game time. How did everybody do?
Spent a little time in the morning hunting before I had to get back home. Only found one rooster where I was hunting. Both dogs tracked it 75 yards or so and then the bird flushed. The dogs were out of site so I'm not sure if they pointed or not. But the bird came up loud and I dropped him. Nittany made the retrieve and that was it for the morning.

Was able to get back out after lunch and we got into some more birds. Both dogs pointed a bird in a hedgerow and Blitz made the retrieve out of the briars after chasing a winged rooster down.

Both dogs hand points and both dogs had a retrieve on the day. It was a great day and I can't wait for Monday.

What a morning! We usually hike to a back field to avoid the opening crowds. On our way this morning we flushed 7 Roosters before legal time. Once we started hunting we had action right away. Dugan was hot on running birds, and I managed to drop one "that flushed". The next two flushes were hens. Unfortunately the crowds caught up to us much sooner than usual, so we slipped out. It's a long season, so no need to take chances.

Way to go Brian, your dogs are on their game! Good luck Monday!

Now all we need is for Penn St. to win.

You're right about the PSU game.
Glad you were able to get some bird action today.

I was lucky today with the pressure. In the morning I saw one guy with his son when I was leaving and the same thing in the afternoon in a different area. It was nice to have an area to myself.

The pressure was almost double where we hunted this morning, which I guess bodes well for small game hunting in Pa.. Tomorrow we head for Pheasant Camp till Wednesday, then it's off to Grouse/Deer camp, that is fast becoming a pheasant camp in it's own right!

Will you be hunting a Co-OP Monday?

How did everyone else do?

I'll be hunting state gamelands on Monday. If I happen to get a limit early I'll head up to the Michaux State Forest where there is a small chance to find a grouse or woodcock.

What type of land do you hunt at your pheasant camp?

Good luck next week.

The area is kinda of unique, it consists of Co-Op's, Safety Zone, and private farms that are not listed as Co-Ops, but allow hunting if you ask.
The other area is Co-Op's and SGL'S.

Good luck Monday!

Great pics bauerline. What grade/type Citori is that and what guage? I am going to give it a go on PA state gamelands next year. Hunted on them every yr. from 1984 -2003 then gave it up because of lack of birds. This yr. I am headed to S.D. from Nov. 7-17. Good luck to you with the rest of your season.

870, it's a 20 ga. white lightening with 26 inch barrels. I realy like the gun and have done well with it. Good luck in SD and take some pictures to share.

I have a Grade 1 Lightning in 12, 16, and 20ga. I really like the 16 & 20 guages, the 12 ga. not so much, because of it's weight. I plan on taking pictures but I will have to e-mail them to you so you can post them up on here because I am not computer savvy.

Just curious, anybody else having as much trouble with ticks on the dogs. Even with the medicine, I am pulling ticks off of Sadie for 2 days. Read an article, which states sometimes the shear number of ticks can overwhelm the repellent.

I was out today (Monday) and the dogs did have a lot of small ticks on them. But they always seem to have a few more than usual during the first week or two of the season.

I went out to the gamelands today with a friend from our local PF chapter. We had a good day with 6 roosters and 1 hen found. Each of us got one rooster for our game bag. It was a nice day but it got too warm for my liking. I won't be able to get out Tuesday but Wednesday looks good.

The ticks that I am seeing are also the small black ones. I have seen several deer ticks. Glad you had a good day. Hope to get out of the office for an hour if my schedule permits.

whats up with that ones tail feathers? they seem really long compared to the first pic and the one i got.

nice pics, good to hear you had a successful hunt. you must be hiding those habitat areas, i didnt see any of those orange signs. i did find a milo field like in the first pic but it was about 7ft tall, crazy!

good stuff! thats kinda what i was thinking, in order to find the birds you had to go deep into the wilderness lol i tried that, i had a spot marked that was surrounded by a buncha woods. after climbing what felt like a mountain lol and navigating through some trails in the wood i got to the spot after 15-20mins of walking just to get there and see someone else already working the area...

i also saw some youngsters out there, its good to see.

The first bird had a little bit longer of a tail than the second. The picture may just not show it as well.

The first picture is from a co-op area.

hmm its just looks different, with the long black tail rather than the normal tail.

I had a few of those co-op areas marked around the state game lands and only found a few of them, none with an orange sign. the ones i found were safety zone ones, which said that you had to ask the owner before hunting them. i wasnt sure what the chances of them holding birds would be since most of the stocking was done on the state lands...

ill be going up this weekend, either sat or sun, maybe ill have to find these places and actually give them a try

It will have to be Saturday. There is no hunting in Pa on Sunday.

really?? well, thats good to know. I woulda been out there all alone thinking it was great all while breaking the law, fish and game would be hunting me lol

what is the purpose for not allowing hunting on sunday?

Likely be going Fri and Sat...only concern is my blaze orange is a mite dirtied from the U.P. and am afraid a WCO may pull out an exemplar to hold beside it.
