Game Time!

Are you sure you just didn't want to clean them birds! J/K .Sounds like a great late afternoon.

Well, I did have to get home and get cleaned up before my two boys' wrestling practice. But it wouldn't have taken too much longer to clean the birds. He just seemed like a guy who would apprecitate having the birds for a meal or two.

Today (Friday) turned out to be a productive day on the gamelands. I'm glad I took the day off from work to spend the day with the dogs. I was out in the fields for about an hour or so without finding anything. Then the first bit of excitement came when a 4 point buck jumped up out of the field and took off. The dogs did a good job of leaving it alone. A shot time later the dogs had their first point on the edge of a pond. The pond was surrounded by small bushes that I could not get through. I heard a rooster flush but I never saw it. The dogs later worked a bird but that one flused wild 75 yards out in front of the dogs. About 15 minutes after that both Nittany and Blitz locked up at the edge of some small oak trees. I walked between them and this time I saw the rooster flush. I made the shot and Nittany made the retrieve.

The dogs kept working and I heard a rooster cackle off in the distance. I can't find Nittany so I start walking towards the bird I hear. As I turn the corner Nittany is 100 yards away on a point. But that bird doesn't wait for me and flushes just as I start walking towards the dog. It's good to know there are birds around. We walk for another 45 minutes without finding anything and I decided to walk to a different section of the gamelands. Not long after I get there with the dogs they start working a running bird. The dogs went up one hedgerow, across a field, down another hedgerow and finally two rooster flush out of range. I decide to walk in the direction they flew. The dogs tracking one of the birds and Blitz gave a quick point before the bird flushed and I had my second bird of the day.

The dogs had a good day and we saw 6 roosters, one hen and a 4 point buck while we were out. It was much better than work!

Good luck to anybody that gets out this weekend. The club that I belong to has a youth hunt on Saturday so I may take the dogs down and see if there are any kids that need some help finding birds. The club puts birds out for the kids and then they are on their own. But at least the kids have the grounds to themselves for a while.

You're certainly having a season to remember, us too. Your boys are getting plenty of work that will benefit them for years to come. Way to go!

We also had Friday off , as well as next week. I'll post when I get a chance.

I was able to get out with the dogs a bit today. They hunted hard and we found a total of 4 roosters and 6 hens. Of course the best shots were on hens and we can shoot them down here. I wasn't able to connect on any of the roosters because they were a little far out. The dogs also had a point on a woodcock. I was suprised to find it here:

I was expecting a pheasant to come out of the bean field that was not cut because it was too wet. I didn't even bother to try and shoot it.

Nice Picture Brian! You guys had a lot of action for this late in the season! We went out today and stayed a little closer to home! Dugan got a bird of his own..he knocked a wounded hen out of the air trying to flush and I was able get another hen! We had the whole place to ourselves..it sure was nice!

My father-in-law come to our house early Thanksgiving morning to do a little hunt with the dogs. We started off working a ditch and moved on to a woodlot after that without finding anything. We worked the ditch back to the woodlot and worked the opposite of it. Nittany started to track a running bird and Blitz then joined him. Blitz had a quick point before the rooster flushed and I was able to knock him down. We decided that was enough and walked back to the truck. We also saw a few deer on the day.
