Game Time!

Got out this morning went to a co-op farm and had a good time! I got two one of them I dropped off at my taxidermist to get a flying mount. I have been wanting one for the wall for awhile now. My dog Kansas is getting old and doesn't have many more seasons left in him. He did a great job like usuall and did a great retrieve out of some nasty nasty stuff up the hill right to me! Sure am going to miss these days when he is gone.

good stuff, im sure its guna come out great.

take all the days you have with kansas as a blessing!

HollowWatcher- I hope you didn't get hit too hard by the storm and that things get back to normal soon.

Thanks Brian..hopefully things will start to settle down here now. More and more power is coming back and hopefully more and more gas stations will be able pump gas!

Hunted York county SGL this morning, killed one ring neck, missed 1 or 2 others. Dogs flushed 12 ringnecks in about 3 hours hunting time. most flushed back into thick woods or flew out the other side of hedgerows. Hard to get those when your alone, while try again tomorrow.

Sounds like a good day, John. I know how you feel about hedgerows when hunting by yourself. Good luck on Tuesday when you get back out.

I was able to get out in the afternoon today in Adams county. The dogs worked well and we got 6 birds up. Some of those flushed wild 100 yards ahead of us. Nittany was able to track a bird for 50 yards before pointing. He and Blitz had to relocate a couple times over the next 25 yards before pinning him. He flushed for a going away shot that I connected on and Nittany finished with the retrieve. I was very happy with how the dogs handled this bird.

We hit another area where Nittany was able to track another running bird. This time Blitz had him pinned in a food plot. The bird ran around for a while before flushing. He gave me another going away shot that I was able to connect on. Blitz made the retrieve on this bird and it was a great day.

I was able to make a lot of good memories so far this year and 3 other people were able to take birds over the dogs so far. I've been very happy with how they've worked.

Brian and John,

Sounds like some pretty exciting hunting for "released" birds! It sure doesn't take them long to get those instincts to escape.
Nice pictures Brian!
John ...is there something wrong with your camera ? lol.

I dont take too many pictures, my dogs wont sit still long enough. I did take a video of Tucker on the retrieve that I put on facebook, dont know how to post it on here?

Hunted the same SGL today as I did on Monday. Dogs put up 6 ringnecks, no shots fired. All the birds were back in the thickest nastiest woods there is, will try again tomorrow. Doing a preserve hunt Friday afternoon, then its back to the grouse woods Saturday.

You sure are able to keep those dogs busy. Good luck for the rest of the week.

I did manage to get out a little late in the day today. Blitz had a great point in some knee high grass. The bird held until I got there and then I missed the easiest shot of the year. I was going to stop later and get a case of Sam Adams but after that poor performance I don't deserve it. I did mange to get one rooster the dogs tracked across a field and down a hedgerow a couple hundred yards. Of course I was able to hit this bird through the trees. Go figure. I shouldn't complain but I'll be thinking of that missed shot all night.

I hope my shooting isn't starting to rub off on you guys! lol. We should be back at it Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Hurricane Sandy set us back a bit, we were without power for over five days. Can't wait to hit the fields again. Good luck to everyone.

Looks like a great year so far for a lot of people.

I took may father in law out this afternoon to the gamelands. He was able to get some shooting in and we got 5 or 6 birds up. I did manage to get one on the day. I didn't see many other people out and I didn't hear any other shots. Looking forward to the last two weeks of the season.

You're right, it's been a great season so far. It's hard to believe there's only two weeks left of the early season.

Had a chance to get the dogs out a little after work today. They had a couple of unproductive points to start off with. We hit a food plot and I couldn't find Nittany so I kept walking the edge. I could see Blitz running the edge and I then saw him go on point. After walking up to him I see than he is backing a point from Nittany just like he is suposed to do. I walk in towards Nittany waiting for something to flush. I see a rooster try to get up but he's having a tough time. I lower my gun thinking he may have been hit before and now he can't fly. Turns out I was wrong and he gets up a little. The food plot was made up of the tall sorghum and I had a tough time getting a shooting window with the bird staying low. I was able to get two shots off but both missed. But the dog work was still good and it was a nice day out, so all is good. The dogs had a couple more unproductive points before I headed to another area for a quick loop. As we were finishing up in the second area the dogs went on point at the edge of a switchgrass field. As I walked up I see two large and healthy doe jump up and run away. I tell the dogs to leave it and blow my whistle. I'm thankful the dogs didn't give chase on the deer. I did see one rooster in the second area but he was in a safety zone so I didn't go after him. Even though no birds made their way into the gamebag it was still a enjoyable time out with the dogs. I hope to try my luck for the next 3 days before the last week of the season gets here.

Sounds like a good day afield. What do you think were the reasons for the unproductive points? Is it confusing when the two dogs separate and you are hunting by yourself? With Springers they basically hunt the same area and should always be in gun range,I would guess with two pointers it can get you a little nervous at times.

How are the pheasant chicks you received from the PGC doing?

The birds may have been running but the two dogs are usually pretty good at tracking a runner. But if the bird ran and then flushed before we got there the dogs wouldn't have much to track. Who knows?

The dogs will stay close to the same area and I've never had a problem with them getting too far off. And they always come back to check in with me when we are out. If I don't hear or see one or both of the dogs for a little bit then I know they are probably on point somewhere and just keep going towards the last place they were. I have had both dogs on different points at the same time. I flushed and shot the closest bird then moved onto the next one and flushed that one. I think that only happened once. The two dogs hunt well together at this point.

The birds the club got are doing well. They have nice colors and long tails. I know there are still some hanging around. Some have been seen ten miles away from the club. I did get some of them when I hunted the area. Here are some pictures of them:

good to see your able to still find some roosters. with deer season starting this weekend, it looks like im guna have to wait until december to hunt pheasant again... :(

thats a great last pic! it still amazes me how beautiful pheasants are

Todays after work hunt started off with some action pretty quick. About one minute after letting the dogs out of the truck they ran down the edge of some woods and then went on point a few feet into the wooded area. I entered about 20 yards away from the dogs and walked towards them. A rooster then flushed and I was able to make the shot today. Things are starting off pretty good today. We worked a swampy area for a little and the dogs start to work a running bird. They work hard for a while before two roosters flush about 75 yards away. It was good to watch them work the area. We kept hunting the swampy area with no luck. I then head towards an area with more tall grass and less swamp. Before we get there the dogs start working another running bird. The work beside and in the hedgerows, through some shorter grass and around a pond. The dogs keep working and get to the taller grass I was heading to in the first place. Nittany and Blitz keep working the area and finially go on point but nothing is there. They work a little more before both dogs lock up. They are facing each other about 10 yards apart. I walk between them and a rooster flushes from under a small cedar tree. I was able to connect on this one as well. I then head back to the parking area and start talking to an older guy. He said he didn't see a single bird. After talking to him a little more about hunting and things like that, I offer him my two birds. I had good luck this year and didn't need them and since he didn't have any luck this year I figure he would enjoy them. He was very thankful for the two pheasants and I was pleased with the dog work. It was a very nice late afternoon.

A couple of pictures from today:
