I need to do some work with my new Knot Head and was wondering if any of you guys have some first hand experience with any of the pen raised bird places close to Denver. I'm not made of money, but if you know of a place that is reasonable and has decent habitat to work my dog, I would really appreciate some info.
Good luck for the end of the season and maybe I'll see you out there in November.

Auer Bird Valley out by Keenesburg is a good place to go. Their prices are reasonable and I do like the cover they have. They also have smaller fields available for dogs that are just getting started.

Kiowa Creek has worked great for me. Close to Denver (a straight shot out I-70 from my house), membership is cheap ($250 annually), they have small fields perfect for controlled training @nc w/a low minimum purchase for the day on birds (any combo of 5 quail, chukar and/or phez) for training purposes. I have never actually "hunted" in the bigger fields which is a bit more $$, only shot at the sporting clay range once (though it is a very nice one), & their clubhouse w/coffee, drinks & lunch available for a modest fee is a very nice one. Oh, & the bird cleaning station complete w/cleaning table, water, trashcan & game shears is very convenient. They also have a gunsmith, dog trainers & a pro shop on premises if desired.

I have heard very good things about Quail Run from the guys in south Denver & Co Spgs too!

Pheasant Farms

Like hen,hen said I'll vouch for Quail Run. I've been a member there for 4 years with the last two as a full member (not just shooting). I've worked with my 1.5 year old lab down there the last two years. They have a variety of hunting fields and also some exclusive dog training areas. If it's not busy you can choose any of them. I usually purchase a small quantity of birds-chukar (I think $13) and pheasants (I think $17) and put them out myself while training. The owners, Jerry and Annette William, are very friendly and easy-going. They have a bird cleaning station downstairs in the clubhouse.

They also have a 20 station sporting clays course, a combo trap/skeet field, and a 5-stand. Check out their website at QuailRunColorado.com.

Send me a PM if you want any additional details or want to shoot some sporting clays.

I like Steel Forks Pheasants. Might be a little far coming from Denver since it is in Rush colorado but they have great habitat and lots of it. They have a wide variety of areas from cut crops, tree rows, draws, and CRP style. The place is very low key and you get the area for the whole day if you want it.

I have been a member of both quail run and steel forks from almost the start of both clubs and would recommend either one of them. Great people and always accomodating.

Do you have to be a member at these places? I was thinking of going out a couple of times for a flat fee. Cleaning stations and club houses are not important for my purposes. Thanks for your info.

At Quail Run, I know that you can do a "hunt" where they put out the birds for you. Their website has prices. I don't know if they would sell you a certain number of birds for you to put out yourself. Call Jerry at 303-646-3868 and talk to him about your options.

I've also been to Steel Forks and they are nice folks, too.

steel forks has non member pricing. You pay per bird and I think is about $5 more per bird or something like that. Google their website and they have the prices

Strasburg Game birds

Ankeny Ranch

Vallhalla

Google these and there are a few more if not a dozen. I know Strasburg and Ankeny Ranch does not need a membership for sure.

The last time I was at Steelfork the cover was very poor, I mean it was golf course like, all but one birds ran off before we even got 100 yard in to the field. I spoke to the owners son about the poor conditions, he told me they only had one good rain storm last summer, the late season grass never came up.

I used to belong at Kiowa Creek, but I got tired of picking cactus and stickers out of my pup's feet. Have been going to Quail Run for the last year or so, I've been a lot happier there. Not as stuffy as Kiowa Creek. Not as fancy, either, but I'm not too much for fancy so it suits me fine.

Homeboy, I believe you do either have to be a member or the guest of a member at Quail Run. If you want to check it out first, PM me and we'll arrange a day that you can go out there as my guest.
