Fufilling Hunt

I recently returned from a 3 day hunt in South dakota. Here are some of the highlights:

1. My 14 year old sons first rooster. He blanked on Sat. But sunday at about 2pm it finally happened. He is not easily excited but was smiling about as hard as he can. Unfortunately I wasn't able to see it as I was down in the draw and had my sons on the high side for easier shooting. He ended up with another on sunday for a total of 2. Did do alot of shooting which is what I was after.

2. Watching my 19 year old son trying to figure out which bird to shoot when he had a " jail break" flush of about 20 birds come out in front of him. He was quite confused while figuring out which bird to shoot. He whiffed twice, but finally nailed one with the last shot. That was fun to watch.

3. Having to break my 2 yr old lab of trying to breed another guys dog that had just come out of heat. He didn't hunt worth a crap for most of saturday. Sunday he had a fantastic day. Many retrieves and worked the cover well. I knew I should have got him on some birds before this trip, but he did get back into form before the end. He will be ready for Kansas in a few weeks.

4. No shortage of birds east and north of Pierre. I have hunted the area before, less than the last couple of years, but definately plenty around. I just hope that Aberdeen is decent in December.

5. Dog got sprayed in the face by a skunk at about 3 pm on monday. He had just done a great job finding a cripple in some cattails. He dropped the bird off to me than went back in to hunt when it happened. He must have got a mouthfull of it too. He started convulsing, puking up white foam and liquid poop. I got him a bunch of water and he came out of it fairly quick. He went right back to hunting and did well the rest of the field.

6. Driving home in wife's explorer with a skunked dog. We were out in the middle of nowhere 1.5 hrs from Mitchell. I was told there was a dog wash there behind Cabela's. Thank god they have a de-skunk solution. Worked well, cut it by about 80%. The 1.5 hr ride to Mitchell was brutal. Nose burning, eyes watering..........Priceless. Wife was pissed, but that is fodder for a different thread.

Finally, I really had a fufilling trip. Even if I would have not have shot any birds, watching my boys have a blast doing guy stuff and watching the dog get a little better, made the trip lack nothing. I even was looking forward to work today. I could have done without the skunk thing, but oh well it is a good story.

Sounds like the trip was good for you, OK for the dog and bad for your wife! Wish I could make the trip to SD. Thanks for the report.

Sounds like a great trip, until the skunk /dog meeting. Thanks for sharing:thumbsup::cheers:

Thank you for sharing and the great detail. Sounds like a great outing for dad and family -- except the skunk part. Good to know that Cabelas has a dog wash facility, just the kind of thing a hunter picks up in this forum.

Interesting hunting story - too bad about the skunk encounter.

There's a skunk wash formula that I carry in my ammo case. Have not had to use it, but apparently it works. Am sure if you go online you can find various remedies that work well.

Thank you for the story. I want to go to SD next year with my son.

It was a great way to expose my younger one to birds. He got several years of action in 3 days. I was lucky when I was his age. My dad, who has been dead for 27 years, had a big group he hunted with in Phillipsburg Kansas. Had access to a bunch of prime private hunting in the mid-70's. I got a buch of shooting opportunities every year. Created a hell of a fever that I still have today 30+ years later. I Just wanted them to get to experience some of that. I let him know it will be a different deal in kansas.

well, i guess it goes without saying, Mom's Explorer won't be going to SD next year! congrats on a great trip!

I have great memories of hunting with my son and a couple of buddies when they were all in high school! Good stuff...thanks for sharing your story!:)

Great post, great story.

There are very few moments of actual hunting that stay vivid in my memory. I tend to remember the funny things that happen on hunting trips like when the truck sunk to the frame in sand, sinking to my chest in a snow drift, or getting kicked out of a motel because "I KNOW YOU HAVE DOG IN ROOM!"

You and your boys will laugh about that stinky ride to the dog wash for years and years. Good on you for taking them out and making some memories that will last!

Skunk off

The skunk-off formula involves a combination of peroxide, baking soda, and dawn detergent. Works very well...take it from someone who knows. My two year old Golden killed a skunk last October and then go nailed again a month later. Some never learn. John

some pictures. The one with the dog was pre skunk:) My boys sent that one to my wife. She has always accused me of loving my dogs more than her:p
