Favorite upland bird to hunt

I'd have to say pheasant, in fact I'm a pheasant nut! The main issue I have is I have to drive a ways to get into good pheasant numbers, but I usually don't mind. However, I do have good quail hunting not far from the house, but while seeing a covey get up is nice, it doesn't get my blood pumping like a rooster pheasant. Last season was pretty terrible as far as pheasant hunting, but we did get into more quail than I've been in a long time. I hope the pheasant pops can recover. Still not looking too good on the family farm in Southwest Kansas.

Quail with Pheasant a distant second. If Quail ever came back to eastern Kansas like they were in the 70's and early 80's, I would only hunt Pheasants 1-2 times a year.

Holly Cow, I am going to agree with a Jayhawk

Quail are by far my favorite bird to hunt because they are a better behaved bird for pointing dogs.

2009 was a great year around here for quail, and it was Ace's first season.

dumb birds

you are right about the behavior, ie: lack of smarts, you just have to work harder to get your mutts up to spead

cheers

Having my dogs up to speed,.... you have hunted with my dog?

They handle pheasants as well if not better than most.

speed

no, i haven't been invited yet!!! anyway, after what shadow oak bo did recently there is not much doubt that setter's have speed and can hunt full bore in that event for a 3 hour trial. quail are a heck of a lot easier on a dog than pheasants and most other birds save maybe woodcock. in your area it is quail with a few pheasants, in mine, it is a few quail and mostly pheasants, i really enjoy hunting what's available, the birds and the dogs. and i believe you feel the same, however if want real class you go for the ruffs and mostly they don't behave very well either

cheers

I prefer hunting pheasant but would rather eat quail. :p

I cut my teeth on pheasants! They invade my dreams, they are my favorite quarry! The thud of a rooster pheasant against the small of my back is the true sign of success. Quail may behave for the dogs, but my dogs have brains and I like to see them challenged! I don't mind if a rooster takes us for a 3/4 mile maze run only to fly off out-of-range. It's all part of the game!!!

I'd have to say quail comes in number one. Of course they hold better for most dogs, harder to hit for some people, and a much healthier bag limits. I must say, I do love chasin them PC as well.

But the best hunting is a mixed bag of Quail, PC and Pheasant.

Quail, I grew up hunting sharptails, partridge, and pheasants. I'll never forget my first quail hunt, the guys I was with had me flush the first covey. Now I do that if I take a new hunter out. Line hunting with blockers isn't enjoyable for me. Watching a dog work a pheasant is enjoyable, just not as exciting as a covey rise. Never hunted PC with a dog, only pass shooting in the 90's. I can imagine PC hunting is a lot like sharptail hunting, which would place it second to quail.
